We figured out who we wanted to talk to on Facebook.  We even figured out where they were coming from.  So how do we talk to them?  What do we say?  Where do we say it?

Before we figure out what to say, let's look at ways to say it.

On their Wall - News Feed

Make a comment on your own wall and all of your followers will see it populate in their News Feed.  The positives are that this goes out to everybody at one time AND that it goes front and center of their view.  The bad news, if they are like me, they get 2-300 news feed posts in a day.  Go on the road for a couple of days and this is nearly 1,000 posts to wade through and let's face it, that isn't going to happen.

In their Inbox

This is the big difference between Followers and Friends and one of the arguments to convert Likes to Friends on a personal page.  With Friends you can send them a personal message.  There are restrictions on the number that you can send at a time and whatnot, but take those rules out of play for this discussion.  You can send a message to their Facebook inbox which stays there and waits for them to take a look at.  Positive, the message is persistent and direct.  The negative, it takes longer AND you have to convert followers to Friends in order for this to work.

Events

Do you have an open house coming up?  Promote it by creating an event.  The event will stay on your followers calendar and show a reminder on the days leading up to the event.

So what do we say?

Creating a relationship is fine, but your business followers need to know that you just made a mean PB & J sandwich.  Now if you just had an amazing PB & J at the local deli, that is a different story.  Make it professional and talk about it as if you are a food critic.  This is entertaining, egaging and not 100% sales focused.  Pepper in some of these comments between your obvious business comments.  Let's face it, if I sign up to follow Charlie Sheen, I am expecting to hear some ramblings about tiger blood and winning, but if I follow Guy Kawasaki, I expect that I am going to see frequent posts about his upcoming speaking tour or book coming out.  So your followers know that they signed up to receive business information, don't be afraid to share the relevant stuff.

Chris,

You present a balanced approach to FB. I'm still adjusting to the recent ability to comment via our PAGEs.

Best,

Steve
