De-Clutter - Easy to Say, Hard to Do - The Psychology of Clutter

By
Home Stager

We're not going to have the room in our lives for what we DO want until we let go of the things we have in our lives that we DON'T want.  I heard these simple yet  life-altering words recently and felt compelled to share them because - de-cluttering is perhaps one of the hardest things for home sellers to do.  I think it is because when sellers look around their homes, they don't see clutter.  They see their furnishings, their belongings, their treasures.  To them it's "their stuff" - how dare we call it "clutter"?

Nonetheless, "Clutter Kills Equity" is a favorite quote among home stagers.   Why?  Because it's true.  clutter

It doesn't matter what you call it, having too much stuff/clutter in a house that's for sale will make it apppear smaller than it is.  Clutter prevents buyers from truly being able to see a house and all its best features. Buyers are very easily distracted by the sellers' stuff that's NOT for sale.

We're so very proud of our stuff. Our society programs us to believe that living happy and fulfilled lives, means buying and surrounding ourselves with lots and lots of it!  The more money we make, the more stuff we must buy.  But all this stuff that we think will make our lives better might actually end up doing just the opposite.  (photo by Rubbermaid Products Photostream)

I've learned recently during a seminar that whether we realize it or not, surrounding ourselves with clutter can create the inability to focus ... clutter can make us feel like we lack control .... clutter can put us in a constant state of overwhelm. Experts tell us that we tend to buy and hold on to things that don't serve us because of something we're trying to heal, hold on to, or remember from our past. Often it's office clutter best to let these things go.

Life coach Jim Bunch explains: it's important to get rid of all the stuff that we no longer use, want or need, because when we do, we let go of the emotional anchors that hold us back - that prevent us from moving forward with our goals and desires....you see, we're not going to have the room in our lives for what we DO want until we let go of the things we have in our lives that we DON'T want.  It really is that simple.

The faster we get rid of the things in our lives that are no longer serving us, the faster we can create our desired outcomes.                    (Photo by EvelynGiggles).

And in case you haven't already noticed, this extends far beyond just achieving a successful home sale. The best kind of de-cluttering that we can do involves eliminating not only things in our homes that we no longer want or need, but also removing things from our minds and our lives, like limiting beliefs, negative thoughts, draining obligations, toxic people, damaging relationships, etc. But for the sake of this discussion, we'll stick to de-cluttering the stuff that helps get houses sold.closet clutter

We're not going to have the room in our lives for what we DO want until we let go of the things we have in our lives that we DON'T want." I know - just because its simple doesn't mean it's EASY!

It's easy to say you should de-clutter, but why is it so hard to do?! Our homes  [closets, basements, attics, garages, etc.] are filled with stuff we no longer use, need or want but we just can't seem to part with it. Why?

Perhaps it's because we're emotionally attached to it.  Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that we've spent a great deal of money on this stuff, so we can't get rid of it without feeling like we're losing something that has great value.  (photo by Puuikibeach)

This must be why we resist, rationalize and justify.  We make excuses for why we absolutely have to have this stuff.  We think, one day..."I'm going to fit into those clothes again" or "I'll get around to reading those books/magazines/emails...."

It's time to get real and remember, we're not going to have the room in our lives for what what we DO want until we let go of the things we have in our lives that we DON'T want.

clutter I encourage you to try it because Jim Bunch tells us, de-cluttering causes the release of natural endorphins that make us feel better.  De-cluttering can cause a mental physical and emotional surge of energy.  De-cluttering can give us a renewed sense of freedom, purpose and clarity.

If you have a house to sell, you'll be so glad you did this BEFORE it's time to start to packing and moving.  Now is the perfect time to start thinking about what you really want to take with you when you move. (If you feel yourself resisting this important step, it may be time to adjust your attitudes about selling your home.  See:  Why Do All That? The House Probably Won't Sell)

Remember, it feels good to eliminate.  Our bodies must eliminate that which is no longer needed (think of how it would feel if we didn't!)  And just like our bodies, we need to eliminate that which we no longer need from our mind, our spirit and our environment.  Try it - you just might be surprised by the opportunities that open up to you! Great perspective on the psychology of the clutter.  The "when I'll fit into this again" -- GUILTY!!  Your last paragraph was interesting, and not in a bad way.  We have to let go of all our S##T, don't we ;-)

Oh, this is really hitting home for me!  I have a big struggle with getting rid of things, especially when they are family heirloom kinds of things (not meaning especially valuable, just that they came from grandparents etc).  I'm on a mission this spring to really cleanse away the excess - partly from realizing that when we are ready to sell and downsize, this will be absolutely necessary to have finished!  So I better get started now...

You are so right - it feels good to de-clutter in our office and homes. I believe that endorphins are releaseed and it does feel good.

Karen, this is something I think is such a common struggle and topic.  For sellers it sometimes puts them over the edge when they're already wobbling from all the other stress but it's an unavoidable subject. I love that "emotional anchor" phrase, very appropriate!

Karen -- This is SUCH a great well-written post.  I love that quote.  I tell my family NOT to bring anything new into the house until something OLD or something no longer used goes OUT!

Karen - It sounds so sensible and so easy, and yet for so many of us it isn't.

Looks like I've hit a nerve.  Clutter sure can be a touchy subject!  Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughtful comments.

Vivian - there's always that risk that a seller loves their house so much by the time we're through with it they won't want to leave it.

Chris - that sounds like a wonderful plan!

Thanks Rob & Michael

Ed that's a common problem among spouses

Chris - so true.  It's never too early to start packing

Randy - it's something we all struggle with. Sure I hate clutter - but MY stuff is not clutter either : - ) I have a hard time letting go of some things too.  College text books, yeah I have those.

Brian - absolutley

Dave and Kevin - you're welcome

Gayle - you nailed it

Laurie - thanks for the book recommendation - I'll have to check that one out

Thanks Karen Ann - you ask a great question, sorry I'm afraid I'm not equipped to answer it.  BTW the advice I was given in the seminar was directed at anyone and everyone who could benefit from de-cluttering their homes, minds and lives.  It was NOT directed to real estate professionals or stagers.  I took that information and related it to home sellers for the purpose of this post.

Anthony - this is a really big problem for some people

Tammie - your's is a truly wonderful story

Chris - good for you

Christine - I believe that cabinets and closets are selling features that need to be showcased in the most favorable way possible.  Buyers look in these places too and need to feel confident there will be plenty of room for their stuff.

Irene - best of luck to you!

Lori - I wish I could too

Steve, Tracy & Gary - thank you

Aaron - well said

Cory - Thanks for sharing!

Kathryn - Excellent question. My purse ends up being the catch-all for everything, especially my children's stuff. We should try to travel lighter - great idea, very liberating!

Thanks Janet - and you're right.  those attachments run deep

Carla - just imagine how it would feel if we didn't do that : - )

Nancy - I've had people call me to say they're thinking of moving in a year now - I absolutely love working with these people because they get it - they know they have work to do and they're very realistic about the time and effort involved, especially if they have a few decades of accumulattion

Thanks Karen

Larry & Joyce - absolutely

Erica - it is a constant effort isn't it?

Diane - just taking the time to de-clutter could eliminate so much of the stress that sellers experience.  It's so hard to convince them of that I know

Thanks Barbara - and I think that's a great policy you have there

George - as you can see, you're not alone, you're actually in very good company with many others who feel the same way.

Chrsitine - you're right, just because it's simple doens't mean it's easy!

Karen - I'm the kind of person that clutter makes me crazy, but I live with two pack-rats, my son and husband. They will save things they haven't used in years. Sometimes when they aren't looking I drag some of their junk (like a 20 year old fan that doesn't work) out the curb and then find out that they saw it and dragged it back in - lol!

I have a rule - if I buy something new for my  house, I take something away. Each spring I go through all my clothes and anything I haven't worn in 2 years goes to the Salvation Army. Great post and not surprised it was feature d- great topic and one we all deal with to some extent!

Karen - there are other benefits to being clutter free - one is being more productive and the house is easier to keep clean; when you can easily find things, you are less apt to waste time looking for them.  It is true - there have been studies done about the "psychology" of clutter and how it affects people, especially kids.  Keep them organized and they will do better in school.  It takes discipline and it sometimes it takes a complete lifestyle change!  Great Post - imagine how much less chaos there would be if everyone looked at it that way!

Barbara, somewhere I heard someone say that a totally clean desk-top is a sign of a deranged mind.  Only you can verify the veracity of that statement.  < impish grin >
