Do you know what I find annoying?

By

I have a lot of evening appointments.  After all, that's when many people are home from work and so it naturally makes sense when couples have busy schedules.

Well here's what I hate...when I'm driving and it's dark...and, I can't find the stupid #'s on the mailbox.  I use GPS but it's only so accurate.  When the number isn't on the mailbox (or if it's only on one side of it, it's very hard to find.  I squint to try to find it on the house...sometimes successfully and other times not.  This often slows me down, makes me feel like an idiot if a car is behind me and often causes me to go round in circles.

Now, here's what I really hate...when I can't see the numbers and it's dark and it's cold and it's snowing or raining...and I have to get out of the car and start looking for your house.

Please, please, please put your number on your mailbox. And please make sure it's large, and please make sure it reflects in the dark, and please make sure it's on both sides.  This isn't just for me, but for your friends, and for the pizza deliveries...and, for anytime you have an emergency.  If you have a fire, the last thing you want is the firemen to miss your house.

Hi Debbie - Your GPS should be able to help.  In our area it is mandatory for house numbers that can be seen from the road.

It is illegal in my town not to have a number posted so that it can be seen from the street for fire/police etc. Don't know why this is not a law for every home in the U.S.

Debbie, Run into that all the time. Showing houses the other day on a loop, coulda gone left or right...went left...and of course every house number on the boxes was oriented for a right side approach :(

We thought when we got our GPS it would be a breeze, but like you said, it's not always accurate. What we also don't understand is how many houses that do not have a doorbell. You can knock on a door forever before they hear the "banging at the door!"

Debbie,

Conrad is right. In our area, it's part of the smoke certificate inspection and I AGREE!!

It is annoying!

Debbie, thats so true, I had a group of new friends over the other night and the house numbers are on this brick on my house that you can't see at all. So in a pinch I drew with my kid's chaulk our house numbers on the road out front....  then promptly went to Lowes the next day and got reflective ones for above the garage (the most noticable spot) ha!

Debbie - I can't remember anyone else ever blogging about this problem.  And it is a very real annoyance.  The best house numbers are large, and are directly under a light so they can be seen.  In a more rural area, reflective name and numbers on mailboxes can be really helpful.  Better yet, having them near a driveway.

Donna - Yes, good idea.  I'm not usually the one answering the phones, so I will need to relate this to my assistant.

Webster - The GPS is only getting me within a few houses (and in some areas where I live it's rather off).  bUt, the GPS definitely does help.

Dennis - I don't know why either.  Maybe they'll fix that at some pt where I am.

Bliz - Glad I'm not the only one.

Larry & Sheila - Oh, yes, I've run into that as well.  sometimes I just call them if they don't respond...I call faster when it's cold.

Michele - That's smart.  And, safe.

Tammy - Good thinking.  Moms are always creative like that.

Myrl - Oh, yes, best when it's under the lights.  I'm in suburban area so plenty of dark roads.  And, yes, it should be on the mail box by the street and large.

Debbie....when you're making your appointment, you should ask if their home has a house number on it.....ask them to put an outside light on....

Debbie, I share your frustration.  You'd think that if nothing else, for emergency situations, they'd want to make sure that they were easy to find.  It's not law in Rockland County, but I think It's actualy wise to have the requirement enforced (Alan #3).

Debbie, it is definitely frustrating!  I've been right there in the same situation.  Only thing that is worse is to have the carriage lights and porch lights out too, so you can't even see the house number on the house.

Debbie - Definitely frustrating.  Hubby and I purposely put our address numbers in a light box so that it could be seen from the street and hubby makes sure they're always working.  He's so good about that.

You know Debbie you are right & I haven't thought about it with new listings especially...i'm going to make sure my new one has it on the house since their mailbox is on the garage...noone will see the number where it is hidden!!

Jay - Yes, I think you're right.  It annoyed me then, and still does.  It's been a pet peeve of mine for several years.  It bothers me more in the winter.

John - Yes, the GPS definitely helps.
