Historical Oracle Dorothy Warden says house was used as hospital!! She was born there!!

Searcy historians love Dorothy Warden's column in the Searcy Daily Citizen each Saturday.  Last Saturday she wrote about home hospitals.  She was born in a home hospital and was Dr. Martin Hawkins's first baby, she says in the article.  The house, she says, is still standing at the location of 402 W Center.

Naturally, I drive by!  It's a lovely structure, almost unchanged through the years.  In fact, I had an owner contact me a few years back about its value.  He showed me through it and I was so impressed by the very "unchangedness" of the house. (How do you like that new word?)  Dorothy says the halls were wide to accomodate gurnies.  I didn't know that at the time so I didn't check it out.  Walls were probably also wide to get lots of air flow.

The courthouse says the house was built in 1925.  Here's the picture of it today.

Godmother,

Is that where my leg was fixed that time? And you remember you was mad when I had to wear a truss for a few months.

Debbie, it will be good to have a doctor in the the house!!  Congratulations on Tasha's acceptance.

Don, I think that view of the house is more impressive than the one I took.  I considered going back and taking the side view and no sooner did I consider it than you did it!  You're always on the ball! Do you think any family EVER was able to use all of those wrap porches?  I tell people that porches cost almost as much as rooms and they are never used.  They still love them!

Nutsy, quit your whining.  I supported you when Mr. Charles beat you up.  What more do you expect of a pore godmoma?

Godmother,

Maybe you forgot about my having to wear a medical truss for a month. You would not even speak to me and it hurted so.

Barbara, in the olden days when there wasn't much else to do, folks sat on the proch and visited. Even when I was a kid neighbors and relatives would gather on the porch at night when all the chores were done, and visit for hours. Ever heard the old country song "If the world had a front porch" ?

It was where my Mama sat on that old swing with her crochet
It was where Granddaddy taught me how to cuss and how to pray
It was where we made our own ice cream those sultry summer nights
where the bulldog had her puppies, and us brothers had our fights
There were many nights I'd sit right there and look out at the stars
To the sound of a distant whippoorwill or the hum of a passing car
It was where I first got up the nerve to steal me my first kiss
and it was where I learned to play guitar and pray I had the gift

(Chorus)
If the world had a front porch like we did back then
We'd still have our problems but we'd all be friends
Treating your neighbor like he's your next of kin
Wouldn't be gone with the wind
If the world had a front porch, like we did back then
Sung by Arkansas' own Tracy Lawrence

I remember the porches on our house.  I spent a lot of good times there when I was a kid.  When I went to town, (walked), you knew everyone you met and people sitting on their porches would talk with you.  I have fond memories, but have to say I don't want to go back to the heat and no air conditioning.  But as I said, those are fond memories.

I've been waiting for someone to talk about the other house Dorothy wrote about...the one "at the top of the hill at Moore and Apple".  That was a story I hadn't heard about before and I can't get a mental pictue of the property.  Wonder if Don can get a Google pictre of it to refresh my memory.

What a great house. I love new construction as do most real estate agents. Hpever, let's just say they don't build them like they used to.

Cliff, that is beautiful.  I probably have heard the song but didn't listen to the words.  I remember when I taught art the guys were in love with the song by some country singer that talked about "just a swangin'."  He sat on the front porch with his girl friend making out.  It's a fun song.

Mary, I can't figure out which house she is talking about and have not had time to stand right at the corner of Moore and Apple and look up.  I have it on my list of things to do.

Charles, new construction is easier on the pocketbook as far as living expenses go.  One has to be truly in love with history to redo an old house and live in it.  I personally just can't go back to the house I had to grow up in.  Fireplace for heat;  open windows for air;  no closets for storage;  cut wood for that fireplace;  no bathroom.  But the big houses like this one probably had many luxury features that were unknown to the po folks like me!  LOL

Ludean, the house that you and Jim built had the absolute maximum of front and side porches!!  It was lovely!

Mary, I've been dying to koow which house that is, too.  (and I"ve asked Barbara to check it out)....guess she's too busy selling houses to work at her other job = keeping us up on Searcy in the good old days.  She will, though...we'll just have to be patient.  Unless Don beats her to it again.  AHEM, DON.

Mary, I took a Google look at top of hill at Moore and Apple and didn't see anything distinctive. I assume

the house is on Apple. Which side of street. There is a structure at right but can't see much of it because of trees.

Anita, bite your tongue, Barbara does a super job of keeping us up to date about Searcy.

Moore and Apple

This is the best I can get of the house at hill top right. Can't see any of it from Moore.

Thanks, Don, for the effort and Anita for the mutual interest.  I guess we will turn it over to Barbara and wait for her to solve it for us.  I would say that the roof line of the structure on the right of Don's picture looks too modern for the building Dorothy wrote about.  I seem to remember that hillside (on the left of Don's picture) all the way down to Moore always being brambles and briars, but I don't have a clue about a structure at the top of the hill.  Maybe it faced the street on top that runs parallel to Moore.

Don, you did a great job of pointing out what we don't know yet.  Anita needs to contact Dorothy and ask her which house she is talking about.  I have been busy selling houses and it pays better than being a photographer!!

Mary, I've got it on my list.

Nutsy.  NO!  NO!   NO!!!!!!
