Domain Registry Rip Off!?

I have no clue how many Canadian website owners are falling for this trick - by guess? A LOT! I personally know a few Realtors who have fallen prey to these scheme...

What is it? A few month before your domain expires - you will receive in the mail a brown - very official looking letter - stating that your domain is expiring and in order to renew - simply fill the form out. The company is called Domain Registry of Canada (I'm not even going to give them a link - those buggers!) . It looks official - there's lots of RED - little Canadian flag - the works!

My FAVORITE part of the letter is where they say, "When you switch to Domain Registry of Canada, you can take advantage of our best savings". Upon first glance, one would think that they offer affordable prices on domains, right? WRONG!! 1 YEAR - $40. PPPPPSHAW!!!!

And what's worse? This is how UN-OFFICIAL this company is - they're still only charging 5% gst - gst was changed to HST and was raised to 12% back in July of 2010.

They DO offer domain renewals, don't get me wrong - but they are EXPENSIVE - total rip off. I'd stick with godaddy.com - they're great! So the next time you get one of these in the mail - STOP right there and rip it up! Do NOT give these guys any money. Period.

To my Canadians - has anyone out there fallen for this? To my Americans - do you guys have a company that does this?

Emily, yes we do. I get these very official looking envelopes a lot. Now, that I figured the tactics, they go straight to the basket

Emily,

I know my registrars, and I pay for years in advance.  It cuts down on a lot of garbage.

I have not recieved this, or if I did, I never opened it because all my bills, etc., are paperless. Thanks for the heads up though!

Emily ... We have domain registry outfits like that around Southern California, get marketing emails often, some with good information, and am sticking with GoDaddy as much as possible.  Thanks for your article, and best wishes.
