How do you respond when people ask you “how are you?” Most people would say “fine” or “ok”. You might even find a few people that would say “terrible” or “It’s MONDAY!” When someone asks this question we expect a standard response. When someone says they are “great” or “terrific” we might look at them odd and wonder what is wrong with them.

When I was a young boy my Dad told me that when someone asks that question you are supposed to give the standard response. He said “people don’t really care how you are, its just something that we say”. His justification for that attitude was a lady he had met in church. He walked up to her and asked her how she was. To his dismay she kept him there for the next ten minutes describing how she had been having severe bowel movement problems.

She indicated to him that she was impacted very bad. Now obviously he didn’t want to know all that. I know I surely don’t want to hear about your poop problems. That is kind of gross. All that being said there is a big thing that my Dad missed that I want to point out to you. Although people do not care about hearing about your impaction, they can be effected by the things you say. IF you are known as being a person that always spews positive things when you are talked to people will see you as a completely different person. You can literally change the way people see you by using different words.

Now I am not saying go over the top with it. But a simple positive affirmation is a great way to change people’s view of you. Typically people who are successful in life, love, and business have a positive attitude. Even if you have yet to create all the success you desire in those areas having a positive attitude will give people the impression you are already there and they will see you as someone who is already successful. Love and relationships are an area that you want to be successful in, well keep a positive attitude and when people ask you how you are tell them that you are great and keep them guessing what it is that makes you so happy and in charge of your life.

I can tell you this works, No matter how bad your situation become that person that is able to see the positives in it.

I try to answer a range from Good to Awesome.  When people react, I remind them that I have a streak going on of waking up every morning since I was born and I am proud of my achievements.  That usually gets a good laugh.  If they have heard that one, I will switch it up with "I am on an epic streak of taking breaths.  There I just did another one." or "My mom said I am her special little boy." The last one, make sure you laugh right away as people might just think you are weird, but it lightens the mood no matter what.

Great post! My response has been "Awesome as always!" (said with enthusiasm) for nearly 10 years. It makes me feel better and usually puts a smile on the other person's face as well. Went to a workshop recently where the speaker said the best response to the question How are you is..."unbelievable!" This way you are never lying! :)
