The Village Of Wellington approved Stadium Jumping's 179 Acre arena in Wellington Preserve, the south end of Wellington last night with a vote of 3-1. There was one member absent and Linda Cohen dissented.

Stadium Jumping Wellington FloridaLinda says she supports Stadium Jumping  but felt the measure was rushed and that it may not serve the people of Wellington. In order for Stadium Jumping to build the new arena they needed a land use change. There was opposition to the way in which Stadium Jumping was seeking the approval. The opposition said that they sidestepped the process and got things done in a way that other folks can not do. But then you need to understand the money that Stadium Jumping generates here in Wellington's economy. The normal process can take up to 3 years. Stadium Jumping has been able to get this through in just months.

Stadium Jumping is the producer of the National Horse Show and The Winter Equestrian Festival. Jean Mische spearheaded this move when he and Mark Bellissimo had a falling out. Read more about Mark Bellissimo and Stadium Jumping here. Mark Bellissimo now owns the Equestrian club and Stadium Jumping has held its events there for years. Well, Mark Bellissimo's attorney said that it was not fair that Stadium Jumping breaks its lease with Bellissimo but also that Bellissimo had to go through a comprehensive plan change through Tallahassee rather than through the village for his new horse event facilities and land use changes. Bellissimo's property is only 70 acres and Stadium Jumping said they have outgrown that facility. People around this area are not happy with the move because their property values are attached to the value of being in hacking distance to the showgrounds and not they will not have this attribute.

LAnd use changes and zoning issues will continue to make all of us crazy. One person's caution costs another person profits. I agree that three years is way too long nafd three months may or may not be the right amount of time. I think that many time, I live in downstate New York these battles become very emotional and controversial. The process needs to work in a streamlined fashion. I quick no is better and less costly than a long drawn out maybe.

I have seen some projects look great in a boom and make sense only to be approved after the boom and go bust when the interst rate markets change. It is a trick business for all involved.

Good post.

John- Thank you for your insight. We have those issues here as well. We also have 3 county commissioners serving time in prison right now for their profiteering in land deals, getting them through, etc! It is a good ol boy system still down in the south. But Stadium Jumping brings millions and millions of dollars to our community, one small town of 50,000 people; that means alot and the village may have overstepped their bounds, but the profits to be made, the industry it brings, is crucial to our stability here just like in Kentucky. But there they got along better and did not have so much fighting among the players. Katerina

Do you go to the council meetings?  I'm impressed - as a council member in my town I see little involvement.

We go to some of them. But we get this news before the village hears about it, actually. The horse community is very close knit here and we are privy to many things as they are developing. Also, Nestor was trying to sell this same property to another horse outfit and we got ----- by an agent who betrayed us on the deal. Oh well, life goes on. Katerina

Katerina - bringing information from all angles to your readers not only informs them of the issues, but tells them that you care about things important to them, like horses. Your readers would be well served if you are their agent. Sorry, about the bad deal, it happens to the best of us.

Katerina, Land use change needs to be a local issue. I applaud these folks for getting it right.

And land use change where there is substantial money in the balance is "political" everywhere.

Good story. Thanks for posting it.

You are right, political is not the word! We have 2 county commissioners in prison right now for unscrupulous approvals and profiting of land use approvals! We have a mess to clean up around here. Now we just found out the mayor of West Palm is involved in some land dealings. Katerina

I learned that from John Occhi in Hemet California.

Thanks, well, I thought it was over but not so quickly! The Stadium Jumping this is a done deal but not the fighting and such among the players of Wellington. Someone is still out to get Bellissimo, more bad press got leaked out about him. Will write later about it. Thanks for the tip to do these posts, gets lots of google juice! Katerina

That is great news !  I just wish the result of the USET Headquarters in Gladstone, NJ had kept Hamilton Farm.  All they have left are just the barns are some of the grounds.  They sold most of the property.  I miss the Festival of Champions, which they held every June.  You were able to see competition in every discipline in one day on the same grounds.  I used to take my kids to it.  It was a great day out for all of us.

Brigita- What nationality are you? Brigita is a very popular name in Latvia. I love taking the kids to the horse shows, beautiful horses and the dressage is so cool to watch along with jumpers. Katerina

Katerina,

How did you know my name was Latvian?  You are the first one in my lifetime that pinpointed it to Latvia.  I love going to horse shows myself.  As a matter of fact I am going to Devon, PA to watch the dressage and musical kurs.  Then in October I will be headed towards Harrisburg, PA to watch the Grand Prix Show Jumping at the Penn Nationals.  My kids will be joining me at the Penn National.  They enjoy going to it every year.  Almost never miss it.

Katerina,

Thank you for the invite.  I have never been to the World Cup, nor the winter Equestrian Festival.  I would love to see these events.  I will definitely keep it in mind.  I am subscribing to your blog.

Yes, I am Latvian.  My son's name is Latvian, Karl.

You should come up sometime to see Dressage at Devon and the Penn National.  Or, visiting the USET Foundation HQ in Gladstone.  They seem to have different events going on on the weekends.

Katerina,

What a soap opera!  When zoning changes and approvals are rushed through faster than normal I always wonder if someone is profiting from it through less than ethical means.  I know of several politicians who got wealthy while in office by buying the right land at the exact right time.

Lab Diena!  (Hey, I do recall some of the words.)  I remember Names days.  We celebrated those, too.  Mine was on February 1.  (By the way, my middle name is Anda.)

I can not remember mine. My brother's was on Janis Diena and every Latvian celebrated that day. We made Janis Diena cheese and Phaska and Piragi. We still make Piragi for Christmas in our family because my kids love it and it is now a tradition although I stopped eating meat some years ago.Katerina

I make Piragi for the holidays, also.  My kids just love it.  My son even asked for the recipe.  Another favorite of mine and my son's is Rassol.
