My Philosophy For Real Estate,

My Philosophy For Real Estate, in May of 2007 I published:  Stone Tablets / Bill's Rules For Loan Rep's About my rules for my Loan Originators. In it I explained why it's so imperative to develop and refine your own philosophy of life. In it I said:

"After much sole searching, I came to some answers. I realized why Sunday Schools, Parents, Grandparents, Great Grandparents, and Friends teach the young so much they can't relate to at the time! My decisions in life were formed well before the questions were ask. All those Great people had influence me. I was making decisions on how I'd behave before I faced temptation! In the Marines we learned our "General Orders" a Marines "General Orders" establish how he behaves when there's no one around to give spiefic orders. There is no harder decision for real estate people than doing what's right when the money is on the table. Good people who've never faced or considered such decisions can make mistakes. These were the same good people I had hired, they simply lacked the guidance. They need "General Orders" or Commandments. They needed to decide how they would behave before facing temptation."

I believe it! There can be no satisfaction, no personal absolution, no ethics, no morality with out a pre-accepted philosophy of life! Situational ethics is nothing but rationalizing bad behavior.

I've tried to create "Bill's Rules For Real Estate" but the subject is to broad for a simple postable list. I do have a firmly held philosophy for dealing with the people involved in real estate My Philosophy For Real Estate:

I didn't create others people's problems.

I can't help every one.

I will improve situations if I can.

I will do no harm.

I will utilize opportunities, not take advantage of people.

I will represent my Fiduciary!

I will know every thing possible about the people on the other side of the table.

I will not lie!

I may bluff, but only if I could execute the bluff.

I don't know every thing, but team will know every thing necessary!

I'm sympathetic with the incompetent, but I will not operate at their level.

I always obey the law! I will know the relevant law! I will render unto Cesar what is Cesar's, but I will make the rules for lesser mortals dealing with me.

I will mentor as I was mentored.

I will tolerate as I've been tolerated.

I will not hate, it takes to much energy! I will forgive, but never forget. Harm my Fiduciary or family and I will not threaten, I will be capable of defending myself, my family, my Fiduciary and friends.

I will respond to people not by what they are, but according to who they've made themselves!

Jon,

I practice what I preach.

Of what value is a low bar?

I don't think I very much from my Father and Grand Fathers.

I don't think I very much from the majorty my beloved old Farm and Land Institute!

FLI's doctrine was simple, Find two clients with problems and leave them better off for having met you!

If a doctrine is easy, what is it need for? Real estate people need well ddeveloped Philosophies, because when they're needed there's money on the table!

I guess these are not to be confused with those 'other' stone tablets. You know, the much older ones.

Melissa,

You're right ether way!

Mine from May of 07 or HIS!

I was fortunate enough to learn HIS long before I understood and/or needed them! When the time came I needed them I found I already knew the answers. My rules regarding real estate and lending provide me with that same comfort when faced with difficult decisions.

I think most mistakes in life were made by people with out the comfort of a pre-accepted philosophy. People with out a moral compass!

Nice list.  It all stems back to the Golden Rule.  Do unto others as you would have them do to you.

Thanks Rob!

The Golden Rule is the basic starting point. Like the Marines GeneralOrders it's a fall back postion when nothing moresi spiefic available!

There are some people out there that would have some strange things done to them. There are also those who justify their bad behavior by a change in syntax rationalize the rule to "Do unto others as they would do to you" GOD help us! There is a reason we teach ouy young early.
