I love big CATS... and was so excited to hear about the latest addition to The Living Desert in Palm Desert, CA. This pretty kitty needs a name... and they are having a contest to find a good one!
The Living Desert is looking for help to name its newest addition: a 2-year-old female jaguar.
The contest runs through March 21 for a new exhibit opening April 1. "Just for Kids"... so children 12 and younger can enter. Entry forms are available at www.livingdesert.org.
The winner will receive a VIP tour of the desert and a family membership to the Living Desert, and will be announced at the opening of the exhibit April 1, 2011!
The jaguar’s native habitat is the Sonoran desert, which spans from Northern Mexico into Southern California and Arizona.
Originally from a zoo in Waco, Texas, the feline arrived at the Living Desert in January. The cat will be used as part of the Living Desert’s captive-breeding program for endangered species.
The jaguar is a near-threatened species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
“It is a big deal,” said Liz Hile, a Living Desert animal trainer. “They are rare, especially in the U.S. I’m very excited to be working with a new species.”
Opened in 1970, the Living Desert is an interpretive nature trail, preserve and zoo sitting on 1,800 acres in Palm Desert.
