Payson, Arizona is one of the best places to be in the Fall!
I absolutely LOVE Fall! I grew up in Yuma (HOT desert) where we were lucky if it was cool enough to change what few leaves changed color by THANKSGIVING! I've seen it 85 degrees on Christmas Day! Now if you are from cold country that may sound good. But I longed for Fall every year. Now I live where we actually have four seasons.
Payson is a small community (about 15,000+) north of the Phoenix metro area. It takes about an hour and a half to drive to Payson from the Valley. The roads are good, the scenery is spectacular, and we actually have people who live in Payson and commute to Mesa/Tempe/Scottsdale/East Valley to work.
October is my favorite month of the year, and its wonderful in Payson. The nights are starting to get cool (high 40s to low 50s) but the days are still warm (about 80). We turn off our evaporative cooler and throw the doors and windows wide. It isn't cool enough yet to need the furnace at night, we just have to remember to close the windows. The leaves around town are just starting to show a hint of color.
