This is the third in a series of posts that will assist first time home buyers prepare themselves for the experience of purchasing a home. Today we are going to look at the process of looking for and choosing your first home.

The fun part - Looking for your first home
As a first time home buyer it is important to spend some quality time with your real estate agent discussing your list of things you are looking for in your first home. Things to think about are: choice of neighbourhoods, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, do you want single family or strata, schools, shopping and transportation. You may find that some of your choices are not going to be available in your price range. Many first time home buyers find that they need to adjust their expectations. Of course it is better to do this before you start looking so you won't be disappointed.
A real estate agent makes looking for a house easy and fun. Firstly she will give you a list of homes to review that fir your search criteria. Once you have chosen the ones you wish to see she will set up appointments for you to view them. If none of the homes you view are suitable she will put together another list of prospective homes. New listings come on the market every day; your real estate agent should be updating you several times a week. It has been my experience with first time home buyers that the process of home shopping can take as little as one week to a month to find the right home.
