Move to Stapleton: A Resident Realtor's View of the Stapleton Community! #4

The #4 favorite reason to move to Stapleton is the parental involvement in the Stapleton schools and many opportunities in Stapleton education.
In this time of state, city and school board cuts, parents and school officials are faced with a lot of tough decisions that affect our children's education. One thing is for sure though that the parents of Stapleton schools will do all they can to help through this rocky time and keep the schools here in Stapleton as some of the top performing schools in the Denver Public School system and the state.
First of all, the options of schools in Stapleton is tremendous. We have Bill Roberts with a K-8 program, Westerly Creek which is at this point for ECE-3rd grade, Odyssey is a charter school that takes a more hands on approach using outdoor education. There is also Denver School of Science and Technology(DSST), which has made national headlines with it's success stories. Denver School of the Arts(DSA) is also renowned for it's programs. There is a School for the blind and 2 educational day cares schools as well. We are currently building a third school that will have an IB program and is opening next fall. For higher education Stapleton is also adjacent to Johnson and Wales University and UC Denver Anschutz Medical Campus at FItzsimons.
With such a variety, people are moving to Stapleton for the schools. There is something for everyone and all have great success in scoring and achievement. I credit this to the parental involvement that these schools receive. The individual schools have great PTAs and they do a tremendous amount of fund raising. It starts even before school does with direct giving parties where parents host parties in the neighborhood and have a fun get together to raise money. There are also ways to give during the year and most do. Each school also has an auction that raises a lot of money. These funds pay for such needed items such as special's teachers, like art, music, and drama. It also gets us teacher assistants that help trim the number of students per teacher numbers down. These are all very important to the education of our children and unfortunately are not provided for with shrinking budgets.
Another huge element that makes the learning environment so great is how active the parents are in the schools. Whether it's the class mom, helping on a feild trip, or dads volunteering at field day, there is never any shortage of people willing and able to lend a hand.
The schools are also new. This does cause a few growing pains but it also has been great having a clean slate and really build the school and schools programs around the Stapleton community's needs and wants. It of course is a huge benefit as well having top of the line facilities and things like new computers, books, and gym and playground equipment. The schools are also leaders in the city in energy efficiency and are great models of understanding for the kids with recycle programs and solar panels.
All of these things put together make for CSAP scores well above the DPS average and are evident in so many other ways as well. Being a product of the public schools system ourselves we are proud and happy that our move to Stapleton has given our kids these great options and the ability to get the most out of their education just blocks from our house that we can bike to, and that they enjoy.
