Planes, Trains, And.......Housing!!!

Who can forget that hilarious comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy---I can laugh just thinking about it!

So, go out today and buy one of those 'not too frilly' midsize cars---spend around $35,000 dollars, keep it for around 2 years, and after fuel costs, maintenance, insurance, etc., you can probably trade it in for about $18,000 dollars (maybe). A loss of $17,000 dollars, not counting all those upkeep expenses!

"A lousy investment, a car", my dad would say!

Fast forward to the world of housing. What other purchase can we make that will comfortably shelter our families, take the abuse of our children and pets, weather the change of seasons, storms, and age---and still be worth more money than what we paid for it 2, 4, 8, years before.

So perhaps the present market is suggesting a paradigm shift of sorts in the way we select our next home. Maybe our selections in the past have been 'more than utilitarian'. Sometimes we have bitten off more than we can chew.

Today, we are given a new opportunity to achieve the 'American Dream' which is still the best buy on the planet! Even with present market conditions, it provides us a better choice than those planes, trains, and automobiles!

Let us make The American Dream achievable to those who follow us!

And its certainly more than likely that in the long run (5+, 10+ years) the home will appreciate again.....

The only probem with housing as an investment is that the dang thing [the house] doesn't stop working when you don't maintain it well, as does an automobile.

I'm constantly amazed when looking at resale homes, say 4-6 of them of similar size and location, all priced about the same but one will be in excellent condition and one will be in a terrible state of neglect.

Yet, they are all priced about the same.  Listing agents seem to place no value, of lack of, on condition.

If I was a neglected and poorly maintained house, I'd just lock up and not let anyone in.

People will give their automobile good maintenance because they have to to keep it running.  Too bad homes can't just "stop running".

Lenn,

Good point. I'm not sure appraisers put that much value on condition. 'Good condition' also speaks volumes about the things in the home you can't see! Thanks,   Fran

 Fran,

Market Value around here is heavily dependent on how well a property/home has been maintained and updated over the years.

The right house, in a good location, is still an excellent investment...however many homes are so oversized and wasteful of our environmental resources that I think they will end up being worth less many years from now. How many bathrooms does a family of 3 really need anyhow ?

Jo,

Very True! I heartily agree! Your asking the bathroom question of the wrong person---With 7 of us we need all the bathrooms we can get:^) Thanks,   Fran

Fran,  I grew up in a 3 bedroom house that had one bathroom and there were 5 of us in the family. My Dad's sister and her husband had 7 children and the two adults makes 9 people and they only had one bathroom too....somehow they managed.

I think that people today are far too spoiled and place great demands on resources...the earth is paying for it now and ultimately we will all be paying for it....including all of nature's creatures.

Jo,

When I was a young boy, we were the first ones on our block to have an indoor bathroom. There were 7 of us, including 5 adults also, and we managed. I think that's what taught us patience. Today, noone has any patience. Jo, I always say we are victims of our own affluence! Thanks,   Fran

Here is DC there are a lot of really old houses in awful shape selling for a boatload of money.  Condition is a biggie, but location and timing are even bigger.

Patricia,

Even though many things vary from region to region, it is still a good time to buy NOW===even if we haven't quite bottomed out. Thanks,   Fran
