In 1820 the small town of Brentsville was considered the center of Prince William County. It became the seat of county government in 1822 when the courthouse and jail was built

By 1893 the center of the county had shifted to Manassas where a new courthouse was built. The Brentsville building was used for many activities including a school until a one room schoolhouse was built near it in 1928. The building eventually fell into disrepair until it was renovated in 2006 and is open to the public. It is one of several projects in which properties of historical significance have been or are being restored.
