Are You A REALTOR? or a REAL-A-TER? I Mean Seriously…

Are you a REALTOR? Do you work for a Realty firm?

One of my pet peeves is hearing a REALTOR pronounce their title, “Real-A-Ter!” And just as irritating is a REALTOR saying that they work in a “Real-A-Tee” office! Good grief folks! We are supposed to be professionals! We need to learn how to pronounce our own titles and professional work places! The word REALTOR has 2 syllables only -- not 3! (even in the south)

Now, I can more easily understand the public getting these terms wrong. After all, we sell Real Estate ( Real-A-state), so I can kind of see where the mispronunciation derives. But when you become a REALTOR, you should be able to pronounce REALTOR correctly. You don't hear a Doctor calling themselves Doc-A-Tors, now do you? Or Lawyers calling themselves Law-A-Yers!...

A few more words that are commonly mispronounced:

Athlete- The word has two syllables, not three.  ATH-LETE, not Ath-Uh-Lete

Dilate - The word has two syllables, not three. DI-LATE, not Di-Uh-Late

Can you come up with some others?

I bet you can!

I'll never forget the stress our real estate instructor placed on the correct pronunciation of Realtor and realty. I'm amazed at the number of associates that didn't learn that lesson.

Oh my gosh - this is SOOOO one of my pet peeves, too.  Drives me nuts when Realtors pronounce it wrong.  You can maybe understand when the public says it wrong, but please!  Made me laugh - would love to know what "stirred your pot" today to make you post this?

I understand....and I can't pronounce IRON.... it is so weird no matter how hard I try...I think it has to do with the muscles in my tongue. You use different muscles for different languages.

Sometimes after speaking Spanish for a long period of time I have a very hard time getting my tongue muscles back into my English mode!

Sheila - in red at 3:15am, very startling. I sat up and took notice. I promote correct speech even though I am fluent in Strine (Australian).

Local town here in Utah Tooele (pron. Twiller)

Adding to Fred some Strine.

Sheila, wow, LOL, that is pretty funny! I know what you mean, but my husband is Russian, and his speech is peppered with things that are said his own way, or... words that just aren't real! I guess I am used to it. But I run into someone who says things wrong all the time, and I mean ALL the time. I cringe, but there must be a reason.....

But REAL-LA-TOUR drives me right over the edge, LOL.
