This is one of a series titled Sail with Juan Cabrillo You can't really sail on the San Salvador since Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo is not alive (he died in 1543), and the ship doesn't exist anymore, having met its fate several centuries ago. However, you can watch the San Diego Maritime Museum build a replica of this 200-ton ship from the sixteenth century. A team of historians and naval architects have spent more than a year coming up with the renderings necessary to start building the ship. They did not have the benefit of drawings or archaeological findings to indicate what a sixteenth century galleon might look like, so the ship will be based soley on what those historians and naval architects think it might have looked like. Cabrillo was a noted Portuguese explorer although he explored the western part of North America for Spain in 1542. He died about a few months after discovering San Diego Bay in September 1542. None of his journals from the expedition survive. The San Salvador will be built right here in San Diego Bay at Spanish Landing Park on North Harbor Drive: Also located at the San Diego Maritime Museum are these historic ships: If you're looking for a great real estate agent in San Diego, well, I'm available 24/7, so feel free to contact me by phone or email. on his 1542 flagship, the San Salvador
Visitors will be able to visit the building site with their paid admission to the San Diego Maritime Museum, which is located in downtown San Diego and includes many ships from the past, including the Star of India, which is both the second oldest ship that still sails regularly (twice a year) and the oldest iron hulled merchant ship still floating on the waters. When the San Salvador is completed, expected to be sometime in 2012, perhaps it will be the flagship of San Diego!

It would be interesting to go out at least once a week and take pictures of the construction to create a timeline.
