Philly Phantic

This blog is one of many blogs about Philadelphia. Here is the previous blog: The City of Brotherly Love: The Introduction of Philadelphia & what the city has to offer.....   Many of us know that the City of Philadelphia is a Football town. Sure, it's won a few of Lord Stanley's Cups (the trophy to the team that wins the championship in hockey), but it will always be a football city because of its blue collar workers and because of WIP, the sports radio talk show. But there is so much that surrounds this wonderful city with lots of history in regards to its sports and those players that were on these teams.            Philly Phanatic (baseball)>>>

Eagles LogoEagles stadium

The Philadelphia Eagles first came into the league in 1924 as the Frankford Yellowjackets. But in 1933 after a 1 year absence, the Philadelphia Eagles were born. The team struggled until the early 40's, in which they won 2 NFL Championships and yet another in 1960, where Chuck Bendarik led them. However, all 3 of these championships came before the existence of a Super Bowl, so the Philadelphia Eagles team since its inception has not captured a Super Bowl crown. Their next chance at a Super Bowl came in 1980 and then in 2004, losing both times.   Lincoln Field Stadium>>>>>

Phillies stadium

The original Phillies began when the Worcester Ruby Legs were disbanded and the franchise was moved by the National League to Philadelphia. The Phillies then were formed in 1883, and history was in the making. Now, as the 21st century begins, the Phillies are the oldest, continuous, one-name, one-city franchise in all of professional sports.

The first Phillies game was played May 1, 1883 at Recreation Park on the corner of 24th Street and Ridge Avenue. Thirty-three years after their first National League season, the Phillies finally reached the World Series. They did it in 1915 with a powerful team led by first-year manager Pat Moran. In 1935, the Phils met the Cincinnati Reds at Crosley Field in the first Major League night game. After 97 years, the Phillies finally reached the promised land in 1980 by winning their first World Championship. And since then, have been to the World Series in 1983 and 1994, losing both times.                                                                                                           Citizens Bank Park>>>>>>

Flyers Logoinside flyers stadium

The city of Philadelphia had been home to an NHL team before for one season; the Philadelphia Quakers during the 1930-31 NHL season. They suspended operations for the next and subsequent seasons until they finally cancelled the franchise in 1936. Philadelphia would have to wait another 30 years for the NHL to return when in 1966, the league awarded an expansion franchise to the city. Flyers was the name chosen for the new franchise as it conveyed the motion and excitement that was to be consistent with both hockey in general, as well as the new Philadelphia club. They won the Stanley Cup in 1974 and 1975 which was won by a group called the "Broad Street Bullies." The Broad Street Bullies remain one of the most popular teams in Philadelphia sports history. The individuals that were most famous in this group were: Bobby Clarke, Dave Schultz, Bill Barber, and Bernie Parent was part of this team also. They then lost in the finals in: 1976, 1980, 1985, 1987, and 1997. Both the Flyers and 76'ers use the same arena.

76'ers

inside the Wachovia center

The 76ers (also known as the Sixers) began play in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals. In 1950 they played against the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA's first championship series, but lost. The team moved to Philadelphia in 1963 and adopted its current name. The team's name is taken from the year 1776, when Philadelphia was the political center of the United States, which had just declared its independence from Britain. In the 1966-67 season the squad included center Wilt Chamberlain and won the NBA title. The 76'ers made it to the NBA finals in 1977, 1980, 1982 and claimed the  championship in 1983. They have been to the Championship game once since then, in 2001.

pocono 500philly park

We also have the Wings (Lacrosse) & Kixx (Soccer), The Soul (arena football), and the Philadelphia Park (horse racing). You also have car racing which can be seen at Pocono Raceway for both the Pennsylvania 500 and the Pocono 500. And you can even throw in some golf, because Philadelphia has held some Senior Championships in recent years. Last, you can mention the college basketball teams that have some good rivals and brought a NCAA championships to Philly, Villanova in 1985. Then you have the five universities that are members of the Big 5 are the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Saint Joseph's University, Villanova University, and La Salle University. This is a tournament held between these schools to raise money for the Palestra.

Wing Bowl

And for those of you that love to listen to talk radio shows, you can listen to WIP 610 Sports Talk Radiohttp://www.610wip.com/   Angela Cataldi and his crew can be adicting to listen to and they can even be hard on Philly's sports teams because they believe in honest sports talk. Some of the big names that are with WIP 610 are: Al Morganti, Howard Eskins, and Joe Conklin (does voices).

WIP also hosts the Wing Bowl which has turned into a National event now. http://www.610wip.com/wingbowl/  This event attracts contestants from all over the World to see who can eat the most wings in 10 minutes. The irony of this event is that it starts at 6 am in the morning and continues until 9:30 am. People start tailgaiting for this event at 3 am in the morning. This is something that you should experience at least once in your lifetime, in order to be branded a true Philadelphia sports nut or just looney.

Bike Race

The Philadelphia International Championship Bike Race --(formerly known as the Core States Bike Race and then the First Union Bike Race)

The crown jewel of the 2006 Commerce Bank Triple Crown of Cycling Benefiting Fox Chase Cancer Center, is the Philadelphia International Championship, now celebrating its 22nd year. More than 160 of the world's top professional cyclists descend upon the city of Philadelphia to race in the longest running and richest single-day cycling road race in the United States. The cyclists will compete over ten laps of a 14.4 mile circuit over the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Kelly Drive and Manayunk Wall in one of the biggest special sporting events in the United States.

Overall, Philadelphia has been blessed with some tremendous athletes throughout the years. Such names as: Football: Chuck Bednarik(1950's-1960's), Tommy McDonald, Sonny Jurgenson, Wilbert Montgomery, Harold Charmichael, Ron Jaworski, Donovan McNabb  Baseball: Jimmie Fox (1945), Robin Roberts, Richie Asburn, Larry Bowa, Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, Lenny Dykstra. And if any remembers, trading Ryne Sandberg to the Chicago Cubs.  Hockey: Bernie Parent, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, Gene Hart, and Eric Lindros    Basketball: Wilt Chamberlain, Julias Erving (Dr. J), Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson.

Update: Brian Brady did a great blog on :What the heck is the Philadelphia Big Five? Sharing some of the City's history in regards to College Basketball.

While mostly a Baltimore Oriole fan for my adult life anyway, I had an obsession with the Mets in the mid 80s, like half of the Country I suppose. I can still tell you most of the players on that team during that time....what I remember most about the Phillies is that they got Lenny Dykstra from the Mets after winning the World Series I think.

I was ready to sign off when I remembered the 'guy' with the long brown hair....John Kruk (sp?)  and then of course isn't that where Curt Shilling spent most of his time? It's coming back in waves........

All my Philly sports references would be baseball oriented because...baseball is THE sport IMHO.  But what do I know, I'm only a girl.

Carole....  sounds like you know some of your baseball. I guess it didn't hurt being a Mets fan....  lol

John Kruk? Played left field and later was moved to firstbase. The long brown hair?  Mitch Williams, the Wild Thing?

Rob....  I am not sure what you meant by this..... lol  Are you a boo bird fan by nature and at heart?  Or actually hate Philly sports?  Inquiring minds would like to know.  And if the 2nd, please stand up and state your team(s).    ;o)

Rob:

I assume your "booooo" reflects the fact that Philadelphia fans are clearly the most knowledgeable in sports and are quick to express disgust with poor performance.

I have heard many people criticize Philadelphians for booing Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt.  I always reply..."Well, he was in a slump!"

Well, I read your intro to Philly. I enjoyed it since I have lived in the Philadelphia area for the last 4 years. But what a mess as in Philly sports. I guess it doesn't help that I am a Dallas Cowboys fan. And I am certainly looking foward to the rematch on x-mas day. It just won't be the same without McNabb playing. Not that we were going to lose anyhow. Dallas would have won in either case. The rest of the Philly teams, they just don't seem to be going anywhere as of now.

The sports teams are in such a bad slump.  Last championship 1983....with teams in four of the major sports.  That's hard to do.

The city of "close but no cigar'"

Phillies... with ownership by commitee...bring back the Carpenter family.

Eagles... with a 70/30 Pass/Run percentage ?  Choke in the big games. Rookies that rarely play...where are the impact rooks?

Sixers... who knows what they are trying to do. Even AI...love him or hate him..."Practice?  Who needs practice"

Flyers... Kept Clarkie in the position way too long. (And the Lindros over Forsberg debacle years ago....wow, who was the talent evaluator?)

On the bright side....... Philly fans are as passionate about their teams as anyone in the country...

...the Daily News is one of the best Sports Sections in the country.

..and sportstalk radio on 610 WIP is probably the second highest rated radio station over just the news channel.

20,000 people (Sellout) just for a WingBowl......woohoo. Gotta love the fans.

THe FOURTEENTH Bowl is coming up.  14 !!!!  Amazing.

I had a friend that entered about 4 years ago.  Made it to round 2...he went in with the moniker "Mo Green" a play of both the Eagles....and the 'Mob" guy.  Each conestant has a different theme.  What a blast.

kalasWell, Whitey, the Fightin' Phils really have there work cut out for them. Two down, runners on first anf third, and down by two runs. Schmidt comes to the plate to face a menacing Vida Blue.

Here's the 2-2 pitch from Blue...

Swing and a long drive to left field...it might be...it could be...OUTTA HERE...HOME RUN...Mi-chael Jack Schmidt .

And one of my personal favs:

Rob...... I know you were......

Brian.....   Well...I would have to disagree about the Philly fans being very knowledgable. Yes, many are.... but there are those that think they are and if you would ever listen to 610 WIP, you would laugh. Everyone can be a coach....  lol  But some of the comments on how they would do things?  lol  I don't think the Eagles would win one game. It's always easier from the stands or TV....

Brian.....  and thanks for your compliments..

Mike.......  okay, my honest opinion.... even though I am an Eagles fan..... I would think the Eagles could have won that game coming up on X-mas day. But with McNabb out, it will just depend. And don't get me wrong.....Dallas is playing some decent ball now. Who knows....  but what a great way to spend x-mas....

Ravi......  GREAT mention....  I had most of this written before I found out. I will have to go back and edit a section for new raw talent.   National League  2006 MVP   RYAN HOWARD

Rob & Brian.... I started spending too much time on this last night and I got burnt out. I even had WIP and the Wing Bowl in my notes... but decided to launch this, after spending an estimated 3 to 4 hours on this. So, as you can see, I added WIP and the WIng Bowl.

Angela....... that was acute comment. I actually dated an Eagles Cheerleader about 15 years ago. Well...funny story and not all cheerleaders are cracked up to be what one would think. Pretty....fun...etc etc. Anyhow....

Carole:

I went to high school with the current Phanatic; he is one tough hombre.

Jeff:

You have to be away from Philly to appreciate what you have.  Come west and go to a Diamondbacks, Padres, Suns, or Dodgers game.  Fans talk to each other and eat sushi at their seat (I had shrimp cocktail at a D-Backs game) for the first 7 innings.  if it's close, they get into the game.  If it isn't close, they get into their cars to beat traffic.

Now Chargers fans are pretty good and Cardinals games are fun.

It is easy to criticize about the Philly fan but I will stack any of them up against any ccity in the country

Is it really Phanatic? Ok sry.  Listen, just one thought before I go to bed, which you may have already thought of yourself....if you really know the current Philly Phanatic, is there a way you can get a photo with him in his mascot outfit? Could be some cool advertising about how your clients are fanatical about your good service.  And no, I'm not trying to be funny lol.  Most of us don't have that kind of an 'in,' so wondered if there is a way for you to take advantage of that connection.  Just a thought.  Have a good night, and if you will be with family and stuff and not around tomorrow? Have a Nice Thanksgiving my friend!

I think the Phils would have a problem with the photo idea.  He's used for Phillies promotional purposes.

Rob:

The Phillies don't own the Phanatic.  They had a chance back in the day to hire the then Phanatic, David Raymond.  They chose to make him an independent contractor at $10/game.  The next year, they offered him like $50K/year if he would sign over the merchandising and licensing.  he kept the $10/game contract.

Carole:

Yes I do know him.  He would probably take my pic with him if I asked.  It would be a tad uncomfortable and disingenuous as I have't talked with him in 7-8 years.  That's a great idea, though!

The Oriole Bird, while cool, would be stomped by the Phanatic .  The Phanatic has been accosted by Tommy Lasorda and many other MLB players.  He can taunt umpires, nag opposing teams, smash the other team's helmet.  The Phanatic is the perfect mascot while the Oriole Bird is, well, "cute".

Don'cha love a thread about Philly Sports ending up on who's the tougher mascot?

Brian, ...well, get in contact with him anyway then it's not disingenuous if you keep in touch and maybe he wants to buy a house and you can write the loan lolol.

It used to be a riot when Tommy L would play around with the Phanatic...thanks for reminding me!

Lastly, I'll take cute over tough anyday...am I a girl or what????

Happy Thanksgiving Brian!

Rob......  yes, some of the callers are hysterical. And some can be rude. Is that because they are passionate?  Stupid?  Strong headed?  I think it could be all 3 and sometimes a combination.

Carole...... nope...no turkey. I am going to my parents. My sister/husband and their 4 kids will be over also. Turkey there. And you?

The Phanatic..... not because I am a Phillies fan, but is probably the best of one of the top 3 mascots out there. I think the San Diego chicken is the original one?  Anyone?  Bueller.... Bueller....

And last.... what about Jeff and a happy thanksgiving?   lol

Carole and everyone else reading this.... have a happy and blessed thanksgiving....  and a stuffed one at that,

Brian...... I was away from Philly for 8 years.... from the age of 13 to 21. It was tough at times... but thank god that Philly had some good teams back then, that they would be on national TV many times. You didn't have the big cable selections back then as we do now. Now, you can be anywhere and watch any team at any time. But I know it's not the same thing though.

So...you know the current Phanatic?  So....next time I go to the game, I can yell out.... Brian Brady.... and he will come running to me?  Or do you owe him money?  Then he would really be come running at me.... lol   Just not sure if that would be a bat in his hand....   and yes, the Phillies made a huge mistake when they didn't take ownership of the Phanatic... just goes to show how management is so tight on their spending. Gee... look at the last 10 years. Thank you for gettting rid of Wade... lol

Carole:

Happy Thanksgiving!  I agree the Lasorda fight with the Phantaic was legendary. I razz Lasorda to this very day if I see him at a Dodgers game.  Only a Philly fan would suggest a mascot fight...classless but proud (meaning me).

Jeff:

If you yell out "Brian Brady" to the Phanatic, he'll tell you some stories about the Apple Pi house at Drexel in 1985; none too flattering to me.  He is a Prep grad, also.

How the hell does a local content blog get 28 comments?  Ohhh!  It's about Philly sports!

I don't know - since I am a BROAD if I am allowed to comment in this testosterone filled blog!

David Akers ROCKS.  He is my fantasy kicker for life and I am his stalker.

I picked up Donovan McNabb (with reservations) and had picked up two extra QBs just in case he couldn't make it thru the season.  Talked to my girlfriend from Philly who I play fantasy with and told her he will be injured soon-this conversation took place 4 days before his injury.  I crushed her soul and now she thinks I am some sort of psychic.  Thankfully Brees decided to produce around the time McNabb started sinking.

The Eagles are my second fav team - Chiefs are the first.  Yea they both suck and can't win a superbowl, hell chiefs can never make it past round 1.  But I guess I am a fantasy football chick overall.

Maybe I should just get back in the kitchen and bake some cookies.....

Renee.... I am impressed. I actually enjoy when women banter and add their 2 1/2 cents when it comes to sports.

I didn't know you are in fantasy football. Is this a paid league online?  Through some friends?  Is this friend of yours single?  lol  But I am serious.... I am single also.  And don't be down on yourself about picking McNabb. I have Westbrook as a RB and Brown as one of my receivers. And Brown is actually ranked in the top 20 as receivers...who ever thought.

Tell your husband to go in the kitchen and cook... I am enjoying this chit chat. Thanks for the input.

Actually I have been playing since online leagues became popular. Mid 90s sometime?

I got kicked out of my husband's work league because they were embarrassed that a woman kept getting 1st place.

I have played with former Hard Rock co workers for four or five years or something like that.  My girlfriend and I are the only chicks on the league and we both manage the same team.  We have the highest wins of all teams all time except we are like the Chiefs and choke in playoffs.

I have been a commish of a friends and family league for two years but the family part caused too many fights and we ended it.

I also have been part of a league that formed with a bunch of online people back in 95.

This year, I got invited to an all chick league this year and am second place, first in points:  da** LT for holding me down!  This one is entirely too easy.  About fourth week in a girl said "why do both of my quarterbacks have bye next to their names but no times for the games"  I knew it would be a good year in this league!

I manage between 2-4 teams a year.

FYI:  Single girlfriends at my age are psycho and there are reasons why they are single <w>

LOL....  I love the last paragraph....  oh my god, hopw funny. Yes, I got into fantasy football in 1991, when USA Today first did this in the paper. Then I was invited to a friend of mines league in 1996 and I have been in that same league since then.

Thanks for sharing..... and shame on your husband. My friend's wife was in our league 2 out of 4 years, but she stopped for 2 years to watch the kids... they were 6, 3, and 1....

My best team of MLB is The Philadelphia Phillies . This why I always fallow their games especially whenever I have some time. I’m always trying not o miss any of their game and hear about the team’s news. But The Philadelphia Phillies tickets get more pricy especially when there are some hot games. But, if we’re really good fans we should try not to be mean when we’re talking about a favourite teams. It’s not only the Phillies tickets that got pricy, but there are other major teams too, so the team needs our support and we should provide as much as we can.
