Paying It Forward with Fresh Produce for Food Banks
We all are good about donating canned and boxed food items to the local Food Banks. I hadn't thought of it until I saw an article the other day about planting some extra vegetable plants when planting your backyard garden. Then take the extra vegetables to local Food Bank.
Also, if there is a local Community Vegetable Garden near you, become a partner and donate time to tend to the plants. Then when the harvesting times come around you'll have extras to take to the Food Bank.
Plus, when there are special sales on certain fruits and vegetables, purchase some extras to take to the Food Bank. The most needed vegetable items are: potaoes, tomatoes, watermelons, eggplants, peppers, corn, green beans, cantaloupes, greens, cucumbers, squash and carrots.
I didn't see a list for the most needed fruits but I would imagine oranges, grapefruit and apples would be very much welcome.
Not only do the extra fresh produce help with the hunger need, they help promote good health and work against obesity.
