Time To Examine The Books

Here in our area, probably like yours, local polticos are arguing over how to fix the education system. The sides are petty steady in what they say, either cut spending or increase taxes. Nothing new there.

Here, we have a growing contingent of folks who want to add a little bond measure to our property taxes. No big deal except that where I come from, California, bond after bond keeps getting added to a families budget. In addition, it seems that whenever one bond is about to expire, a new one coincidentally pops up to take its place.

10 bucks a month is no big deal. Yet! Lets examine some numbers though. About $5K per year per student gets spent here, Idaho. When my kids attended a private school, with a far superior education, but an inferior football team, the cost was a bit over $3K per student. A $2K difference. They rcvd. many perks that public kids do not get. We know because we are trying public this year per the kids request. There seems to be a fee for everything which is kinda funny to me.

Yeah its only 10 bucks but what are they doing with the money that I am sending them now? It is time to open their books, figure out where the waste is and cut it.

School is for learning. Having 6 soccer fields, and a beautiful new gym is not included in my book. Having all kinds of para-professional teachers is not necessary. Having 14 maintenance guys at the local high school is not necessary.

Someone needs a professional manager to run things. It is time.

My kids have been in private school for years now and the cost per student is less than the local public schools.  Yet our kids get many more perks and much smaller teacher to student ratios.  Yes, the clubs and sports and music programs are lacking but there are plenty of those available from other sources.

If they want some real change and save major money, start offering students vouchers to go to any school they want, public, private, or home schooled.  Also start offering distance learning like just about every college or trade school now offers - the sticks and bricks cost taxpayers a massive fortune.

Competition would change it for the better. The problem seems to be that the unions fight it at every step.

Government unions benefit nobody but the union bosses and the members.  The taxpayers are being fleeced and the public is finally starting to figure that out.  I am all for union busting when it comes to government unions.  Good riddance.

Kevin, I know what you mean. Just had a 30 million new High School crammed down our throats even after 2 referendums were voted down to increase taxes more than the state legal limit. They didn't care, there are always ways to do it. They wanted to build a school that we can be proud of! I was pretty proud of our school when my first daughter graduated near the top of her class. According to both my children, there is really no need for it. There were wants and desires for it. Yes a little overcrowding but there were plenty of other options they decided weren't good enough. At least they aren't going to have a new football stadium, track, indoor pool and other amenities in this toned down version. They started at $125,000,000! I'm with you.

I believe we will see much more accounting for where the money goes as the majority of American taxpayers are at a point they have no more to give if they, as individuals, are to survive.  I came from corporate America where people were fired for nonperformance.  And yet qualified candidates lined up for every job vacancy.

The school budgets are a major part of our taxes.  If we could see our educational standards raised and our scores in the top % worldwide, I might be more understanding; but when we are not even in the middle range internationally, this a disgrace.
