Public Safety White PlainsAt the outset – I would like to stress that this is unusual for downtown White Plains.  It may be a  sign of the times.  Certainly many cities have reported an uptick in crime although White Plains  NY has not really had any spikes in the crime rate that I am aware of .  Desperation makes people do desperate things.

Sunday started out as a day that is somewhat typical of my weekend.  I had two sets of showings with two  buyer clients.  My last client was a referral from someone I had sold a home to a few years ago and we were combining business with pleasure as I found myself enjoying a lovely party in his unit after the showings.

At about  4 PM I left the party and started to head towards my car. I was thinking of what I needed to do next.  Lost in thought – I was unaware that I was being approached from behind.   Suddenly someone came up behind me. I thought he was tapping me on the shoulder – suddenly I felt my arm being jerked and he grabbed my computer bag/briefcase and ran up the street at break neck speed- jumped into a waiting car and sped away.  A good Samaritan stopped briefly to see if I was Ok and took off in pursuit.  I started instinctively feeling for my cell phone. Oops!  The cell phone was in the bag….My phone  gone -  I headed back to my former client’s home to call the police.

The police showed up promptly and said that they a couple of cars were chasing the suspects that the good Samaritans had called in.  Someone was caught and my things are now being held in evidence, but the amazing thing is that I didn’t lose a thing except a bunch of business cards that they had strewn all over the place.

The detectives were extremely kind – you could tell a couple were probably putting in a lot of overtime from the recent sad but necessary cutbacks.  They took my statement and were more than responsive.  They made a situation that can be traumatizing for many as easy and seamless as they could.  By 8 PM I was on my way home – none the worse for my experience – though more than a tad drenched.  The one those guys took that I really needed was my umbrella!

OMG, I can't believe that happened to you.  But, so lucky to have the good samaritans.  Wow.  What a story.  And, yes, it was a doozy Sunday.  I'm sure you were drenched.

Oh how terrible!  That would be just as shocking if it happened here.   Hang in there.  I had it happen to me twice when I was an intern in DC.   I never got hurt, but it surely is scary and you will be looking over your shoulder from now on, which is a shame.  I am glad that at least there were some good samaritans to help you and that you are getting your stuff back.

Ruthmarie - the important thing is that you are ok and weren't harmed, although I am sure that this incident will stick with you for awhile. Glad that a) the good samaritan was there to keep track and 2) the police were able to apprehend the responsible party. Take care and stay aware!

Hi Gita - To be honest - I feel more foolish than anything else.  Because its a very safe area - I wasn't paying one bit of attention.

Hi Debbie - Unlikely area huh???? Seriously - broad daylight in a heavily trafficed area about two blocks from the Ritz Carlton - what could be safer?

Hi Coral - Although I'm sure there are incidents from time to time  - this is shocking for this area of Westchester.  White Plains is not a heavy crime area.  Not at all.  Which was probably why I wasn't paying proper attention to my surroundings.

Hi Mike - Yup - you are right - I wasn't paying attention.  Not at all.....The main thing is I'm unharmed and going about my business.  I have a large Cattle Dog/Husky who I affectionately named "80 lbs of death"  Maybe I should bring him with me more often!  Actually its because he is so protective that I don't take him out in public that much.

It's not shocking to think crime would increase during a down economy but very disturbing to read this happened to you.  Right in the middle of the day no less.  I guess it has more impact when it is so close to home.  Yes, the important thing is that you are okay. Maybe try partnering up or working these things with a buddy?

All the best of luck to you and stay safe out there!

Hi David - I WANT MY UMBRELLA BACK! - We are supposed to get 2-4 inches or rain tomorrow!!!

Hi Miriam - Who would think?  You just never know...I used to work at Presbyterian Hospital back in the days when you needed to walk the streets with a machete.  I was always on my guard...but not right off Broadway by Lake Street!  That's as safe as it gets.  I wasn't hurt at all - I just feel a tad foolish.

Hi Charles - I've been having a problem with my feet and may have to have knee surgery...I think that had a lot to do with vulnerablity.  I had just finished climbing about 18 flights of stairs between two sets of clients. Knees are funny - hills Ok - stairs - not so much - particularly going down. I was not walking with my usual steps and was thinking ice was a good idea.  I think that showed.  I think the fact that the bag was a computer case - although I had removed the laptop for the showings - also factored in.  Easy target (not normally - but in that case) looked like I had something of value - no one around because it was raining...It's called oportunistic....
