Has the High Price of Gas Changed The Way You Do Business?

By
Real Estate Agent with Massachusetts Buyers Broker Agency, LLC

I don't know about you, but I found myself wondering if the price of gas is going to reach $5.00 a gallon soon. This increase in gas has also caused me to re-evaluate my business. The upside to all of this is that by re-evaluating my business choices, I am reaping the benefits of being more organized and streamlined.  For instance, I no longer make several appointments to see property.  I want to get the most homes shown in the most efficient way.  I research and diagram the shortest routes.

Gone are the days when I took one buyer to see one property. The exception, of course, is if the trip is necessary for the deal.  But, seriously, clients should understand that I am trying to run a business and therefore I call the shots about how we go about looking for homes. How about you, what changes have you made in light of the high gas prices?

Melissa,

I am working mostly from home now and think twice about my trips out for errands.

I also think this will have an effect on the real estate once again!

Gas prices are also making agents rethink taking out buyers who are not yet Pre-Qualified.  Of course, this should be standard practice everyday, but rising gas prices tend to influence it more.

I changed my pricing a bit. If I have to go to another county I charge an extra $50.00 for gas. Don't like to do that but it's getting out of hand.

Melissa -

Anything that helps us streamline the process of showing homes is good.   Although I would prefer a method that isn't so costly!  I have actually had instances where I let the client drive!    They have actually said "hey, you know, gas is expensive so let me drive"  I used to shrug it off as a cost of doing business but now if they offer, I let them!  Besides, we are in the mountains and what better way for them to get a feel for the roads they will be traveling.  If a driveway or access road is going to make them uncomfortable I'd rather find out now than after we write an offer and they go back by themselves and have to drive it on their own for the first time.

How much is gas there is Massachusetts?  It's currently $3.58 here in the Charlotte, NC area.  Does your office have sales meetings?  Ours are on Tuesdays and I'm contemplating what to do today.

I try to line up most of my errands for one trip....most of my work is done from home as that is my office now...I will only show one home to a potential client then they must be in the process of being pre-approved or I cut ties. (actually I did that one before gas went up) LOL
