This is one of a series titled The cats are beckoning you Ever heard of the beckoning cats? Neither had I until now, but Japan's Beckoning Cats will be beckoning YOU to visit them at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park beginning Sunday, March 13, 2011: According to Wikipedia, the Beckoning Cat, Maneki Neko, is part of Japanese culture and are also called Welcoming Cat, Lucky Cat, Money Cat, or Fortune Cat. Although you and I might think that they are waving cats, the Japanese beckoning gesture is to hold up one hand, palm facing out, and "repeatedly fold the fingers down and up," just like many Westerners wave goodbye. There will be 155 Beckoning Cats on display at the Mingei International Museum, some dating back to the 1600s. They will be beckoning you until January 15, 2012. Modern Beckoning Cats are usually ceramic, but the ones in the Mingei collection, recently received as a gift from Billie Moffitt, are made of clay, wood, and metal, too. As a long-time tennis fan, I recognize the name Billie Moffitt as the maiden name of Billie Jean King. I believe she has an appreciation for our fine little felines, so I'm curious if this was her collection that she recently donated, especially since she was born just up the road in Long Beach. For more interesting information, including how the Lucky Cat legend came about, visit this page of the Mingei International Museum online. I will be going either Sunday or Monday and will have a collection of pictures to show you next week. Beckoning Cat picture credits: Single picture from Wikipedia. Beckoning cats have one paw upraised and seem to be beckoning you to come with them, pay attention to them, perhaps even pet them. They look like this:
I had seen some of those in San Diego's Old Town, but I always thought they were waving cats. I never knew they really had a history behind them.
let me Google one for you.

This looks like just the kind of exhibit that would be promoted by Zoey the cat.
Life is better when there are flowers to photograph!
I know you enjoy flowers so I thought I'd leave this picture for you.

Jim - Amazing the things I learn on AR ... thanks for the primer on Japanese cat motif! I can hardly wait to figure out a way to work that into my next "Cat Conversation ...!" Be well ..
By the way, I'm a big cat person even though my two cat's seem to have been neglected from my blogging activities lately.
Interesting information. I lived in Japan for four years and this is a bit of cultural tradition I missed. Thanks. And to think I expected an update on your condo farm area!
Jim, I wish I lived closer and could see this exhibit. I've never heard of beckoning cats before. AR is really an amazing source of information and education. Enjoy the exhibit!
Cats have managed to capture lots of attention throughout history. Fun exhibit and I know you are a cat fan so this should be a great event to attend!
Have fun at the exhibit! My cats have their own way of beckoning me.....when they want something they ME-OW!

Hi Jim, So how is your Cool Cat going to feel if you bring those crazy beckoning cats in the house? Will she be beckoned over to visit with them?
Good morning, Jim. Very cool story, and excellent Localism post! (Looking forward to your photos of the exhibit.)
Jim - It is always fun to stop in your blog and experience something new. I had never heard of Beckoning Cats. Learn something every day. Thanks.
Hi Jim,
That's cool. Never heard of beckoning cats before. Do your kitties ever wave at you like that? My cat just pushes his head against me when he wants attention.
