Are you cut out to own your own business? Do you really have what it takes to be your own boss? The life of an entrepreneur is not for everyone. In fact recently the Harvard Business Review put out some research that said that most people are really not cut out for the life of owning their own business.

They came up with a set of questions, twenty to be exact, and said that if you answer yes to more than 17 of them you are likely the kind of person who need to be in business for yourself. Notably “I want to be rich” was not in the list, nor was “I like to take risks”. What are the things that make an entrepreneur great. I am not going to go through all twenty examples, but I will take a look at three things and tell you why I picked them.

“I like new and better ways of doing things.” Another way of saying that you are an innovator. When you work for someone are you the person who is always trying to come up with more efficient, more customer friendly, more cost effective ways to complete a process? If you are then you are likely cut out for being your own boss.

“Í can’t sit still.” This one may sound odd, but when I read this one to my girlfriend she said, “that is so you!” Its not that I am jittery by nature, but my mind is always working on things behind the scenes. When the solutions hit I move on them. I cannot sit still, I have to be up and making things happen, or sitting down and making things happen on my computer. It isn’t about where you are physically as much as it is about what you are doing with your time.

“I like to question conventional wisdom” This doesn’t mean that you want to re-write all the laws, just most of them. Entreprenuers see opportunity and they grab ahold of it with both hands. They don’t let the way its always been done stop them from the creative process of doing it better. If in reading these three attributes you see that you have these characteristics maybe you are the kind of person that can effectively run your own business. The economy is driven by small business owners like you and me who do the work and provide the products that we all use and enjoy.

If you are not in business for yourself yet, then maybe you should consider it. If you are in business for yourself already then think about how you can use each of these talents in your business to further your goals.
