Children RunningSo Jason Sardi is in pursuit of the perfect sentence, one that “explains it all”.  He thinks the world can be summed up in a simple sentence, and he’s going to find it, or write it.

I believe in that boy, but thankfully, this time he’s wrong.

You cannot explain away the world in a sentence.  The best we can do is perfectly explain one little thing.  There are moments when we are able to express exactly what we meant, when we can pull just the right words out of the air and share something inside of us, just as we see it.  It is exceedingly rare, but every now and then we do it.

These are tiny shard of perfection.   That is more than enough for me.  A couple times I've been able to share pretty much what I was thinking.  I feel like I came close with this one.   If I can hit it close enough every now and then, it's enough.

I love quotes because they say one thing so simply, so completely, that you don’t need more words.  They stand alone, little gems of wisdom or truth, just waiting to be discovered and understood.

Once you accept the fact that you're not perfect, then you develop some confidence.  ~Rosalynn Carter
Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it.  ~Salvador Dali
I cling to my imperfection, as the very essence of my being.  ~Anatole France

But the quotes can't explain it all, they're just more tiny shards.

We are not perfect.  I am THANKFUL not to be perfect.  I think that the world is a better place because of it.  Perfection would make us stagnant, with nothing more to achieve.  I would hate it, with every fiber of my being.

We are complex and flawed -- and Jason, you will never be able to explain the world in one sentence because we can’t even understand or explain ourselves.  Keep looking for your sentence and keep writing.  You won’t find perfection because it’s not a destination, or anything real that you can read, touch or feel.  But the pursuit, aaah, that’s where your perfection lies.

Perfection hides in that moment that you look into each other's eyes and know that the person you love loves you back.  It's in the first precious smiles from your baby.  It's in hearing your children laugh together in another room, and knowing that they love each other.  It's in seeing your friends build up lives they deserve.  Sometimes it's just from witnessing random kindnesses given from one stranger to another.  It is rarely possible to put it into words, and you can never gather it all into one sentence.

You will find little shards of perfection while you search, and hopefully when you can put together enough of them, you’ll feel that it’s enough.

And now Tall One has something to say to you:  Ah, but there is an answer to life, the universe and everything.  It’s 42.  Now we just have to find the question.

(If you read Douglas Adams, you know what she’s talking about.)

Tracey, sometimes it's not.  Or it might be.  Nope.  Try again!

You wait Cooper, I will prove you wrong.  I smell a debate of sorts, where's Waldman?

Anywhoo, it will be difficult but I'll retort in kind.

Jason Crouch - Thank you.  Or thank Sardi because he disagreed with me and then challenged me to a "debate".

Jason Sardi - BRING IT ON, TOUGH GUY!!  Waldman will probably smell a debate and show up, too.  Hit me with it, I have no fear.  :o)  (And MWA!!!)

I always say I do not believe in perfection; it doesn't exisit.

"Perfection hides in that moment that you look into each other's eyes and know that the person you love loves you back.  It's in the first precious smiles from your baby.  It's in hearing your children laugh together in another room, and knowing that they love each other.  It's in seeing your friends build up lives they deserve."

Not quite sure you changed my mind, I think that there are moments that are perfect (like my son's first smile to me...on my first Mother's Day).

Now you have me thinking...

Perfection would be boring, but finding something that is very, very, very close to perfect can be exhilarating!!

Tom - I want to hear more about that!  Post, please!!  :o)

Mariana - Listening to that link now ... you may be close.  ;o)

Ann - Perfection exists, but not in big chunks.  It's just in little shards and you have to keep looking for them.  They're easy to miss if you aren't paying attention.  Think away and feel free to debate me alongside Jason if you want.

Eric - Yes it is!!

I beg to differ...there is no perfection except what is percieved by the individual. Me? I always had the attitude that "I was not good enough".....now it's I accept what I am...not what I am not. My babies were "perfect". They were mine.  The truth is...they were innocent....until I started teaching them.

And I am satisfied at this time at this moment. When it begins to be "not enough" it may be my "expectations" getting in the way.

Love ya sis! Good stimulation this am!

Sarah(my little one), What are we going to do with your little bro? It's pretty deep where he plays. I thought Tracey was pretty close with "it is" all though I do agree sometimes "it's not". I do however like "It happens" and it certainly "doesn't wait". Now of course I live in my own little world so in my case "it's me" works just fine:)

Sally - Perfection is in the eye of the beholder, very true!  And you have to be looking for it to see it, I think.  You find more good in the world when you're looking for it, and more bad if that's what you expect to see.  I think the world is pretty fabulous because that's the world I want -- and not because I've never had anything bad happen to me.  I just want to live in a nice world, so most of the time those are the things my brain will pick out first.

Tom - I look forward to it!  That sounds interesting.

Bryant - He is pretty deep and he challenged me, I couldn't back down.  Can't wait to hear his side of it, hopefully tonight!  (I'll probably be asleep before he writes, we might as well be in different time zones. )  Trying to think of what two word sentence I might like ... "maybe so" ... "I hope" ... "I am" ... "more wine" ... nah, I'm out.

Hmmm. Knowing that perfection comes in so many flavors, I'm throwing my vote in favor of Sardi coming up with a nice version of it. But I'd love to see Waldman enter this arena.... Adam, didn't you once say that you are 'always watching??' Jump on in...

I'm with you Sarah in that the right quote can be very powerful. My favorite is from Queen Elizabeth the Second...

"You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate".

It works in my profession as well as my personal life. I like to think I have some control over my destiny :) Nice post!

Great quotes Sarah.  Where do you get these things!  I love your writing, and couldn't agree with this post more.  There will never be one thing that describes who someone is, or what life is. Keep up the amazing posts!

SARAH:  Sorry for being late, as I see that you and I were scheduled to co-host this little soiree.  Ironically, I think that you put this thought out there perfectly.  I think that perfection is something that you feel internally about something that happens to you externally.  It's a moment, and then the moment is gone (now I have Kansas, Dust In The Wind playing in my head).  If you try to recreate it, it won't feel perfect again.  That is the beauty of it.  That is why it feels so intense at the time.  Sardi is like the Active Rain version of Monty Python.  He's out looking for the wholy grail.  Good for him for trying, as long as he doesn't get frustrated by the search.  I didn't find anything to debate about with this subject, but those of you that want to see some new perspective on the Sardi post, should go back and check out the comment that I left.  You can find it easily by scrolling for a photo.  I enjoyed this post a lot Sarah.  Thank you.  Now, everyone, please pick up your gift bags as you leave the Cooper/Waldman party.

Jennifer - Jason did a great job with it, but he still hasn't changed my mind.  And I don't really want to change his because I think he'll find enough perfection along the way that the search will be worthwhile.  Love your quote!

Lexa - I go to QuoteGarden.com a lot, and if you do searches for people you like you find even more great quotes.  I have books of quotes too, but it's much easier to find the ones you like online for some reason.

Adam - So glad you arrived!  "Sardi is like the Active Rain version of Monty Python."  LOL!!!  I'll be singing this all day now!   (Love Dust In The Wind, too!)  Perfection is fleeting.  Pay attention so you don't miss it.  Happy to host a party with you anytime, Adam!  (Liked your comment to Jason, too -- can't wait to see what he'll say about it!)

Sarah - This is lovely. I reminds me of a poem I read once in a Sierra Club book. I tried an on-line search for the author, but came up empty-handed. As close as I can remember:

Cease searching for the perfect shell

Its whole, inviolate form no tooth of time has cracked

Its alabaster armor still intact

From sand's erosion and the breaker's roll

Thanks, Sarah. I always love reading what you have written.
