Maine continues to shine as healthy, home sale wise despite the contrary in many spots of the nation.  In the last quarter according to MREIS (Maine Real Estate Information System), sales are up 7.56%. Compared to last year, sales increased 12.55 % for a median average sale price statewide of $139,000.

Within Maine, Piscataquis County had the highest increase in median sale price last year, 43.18 percent; while Washington County performed the worst, with a 17.14 percent decline. The median price rose to $63,000 in Piscataquis, while it dipped to $87,000 in Washington.

The highest median sale price for 2002 was in Cumberland County, where the typical house sold for $195,000, an increase of 21.88 percent from the previous year. The low was in Aroostook County, where the median-priced home sold for $52,000, an increase of 18.18 percent, the Realtors' group said. Aroostook County's historically lower priced, high value housing stock continues to move well regardless of the national trend or spikes.

Elsewhere in southern Maine, the median housing price and the percentage increase are listed by county: Androscoggin, $116,500, 19.49 percent; Knox $163,000, 3.49 percent; Lincoln $155,000, 23.02 percent; Sagadahoc, $155,000, 16.76 percent; York $179,475, 15.79 percent.

In Maine's other counties, median prices and change were: Franklin $90,500, a 20.67 percent increase; Hancock $145,000, a 21.85 percent increase; Kennebec $100,000, an 11.73 percent increase; Oxford, also $100,000, a 14.94 percent increase; Penobscot, $95,000, a 10.47 percent increase; Somerset, $67,250, a 2.89 percent decrease; and Waldo, $126,000, a 13.51 percent increase.  Just goes to show you that you can not apply everything reported in the media to all spots in the nation.  There are bright spots and Maine and the northeast are moving homes and other real estate despite the national trend.

There are lots of bright spots...just easier to be a gloom and doom for many in the media...it gets depressing when blanket "everywhere- is- in- the- toilet" statements circulate over and over.  Thanks for the shot!
