Is there life after granite countertops?

Just took a listing that's a true blast from the past. Built in 1957, everything is original, and still in excellent condition. It has one of my favorite design elements-- colorful bathroom tile with bright multicolor trim... and not a chip in sight.  In this world of total granite oversaturation, 1950s tile feels so refreshing!

Seems like about 95% of the homes out there now have granite countertops which makes me wonder.... what's the next upcoming trend? Have we had our fill of granite yet? Like most home design trends, granite started in luxury homes, then worked its way down to the most humble condo conversions. Most trends, once they reach the general population level, are either post-peak or rapidly heading that direction.

There are truly some beautiful slabs, yet after awhile they all start looking the same. However, last night I was showing homes in Coronado and was especially impressed by one-- the owner had redone her kitchen in beautiful blue granite, and it really stood out from the crowd. Another home used Sautillo tiles everywhere, and it gave her entry, kitchen and dining room a rustic, earthy look.

So, interior designers, what's the next trend? What do you think will replace granite?

I'm waiting for the answer, too....suddenly granite just doesn't seem so "fresh".

Yes, granite has probably seen its peak. I'm sure the blue granite you describe was lovely, but I'll bet it won't seem so nice in a few years when the granite phase is past.
