Laramie, Wyoming Real Estate: . . . in the Eye of the Beholder

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose art is that way, too.  So it was with an open mind that I accompanied our children on a field trip to Laramie's latest installment of Sculpture, A Wyoming Invitational.  (www.uwartmuseum.blogspot.com ) in June of 2008.

Seriously?!  Was this a practical joke?  The artist, a man from New York state, took this work quite seriously.  He seemed annoyed by the children who didn't get the deeper meaning of it and could only see it as a giant earth worm.  Me, all I can say is "Bless their little hearts" as NOT one of them made a single reference as to what else this looks like!

"Over and Under"

Huh?

I think the real title of this was "Over and Under".  Thankfully, there was a plan to take it down late the following summer and they did.  I always wondered what the people driving by on the interstate must have thought if they noticed it!

Brenda, I've seen a lot of great art all around the world -- this one doesn't cut it.  I also won't say what it looks like to me. I'm really glad they took it down.

Hi Gary!  Thank-you!  I thought maybe we just lacked the "sophistication" to appreciate it....but coming from a well-traveled person such as yourself I now know our instincts were right on!  :-)

Scott - Things like this are the reason that people are ready to take away the tax money from the humanities!

Hey Bob "Real Man"- You should get an A+ for keeping it clean... :-)

Well, they do things big in Wyoming, all that vast open space.

That is very strange looking, Brenda. The children were, indeed, very polite about it.

Hi Tim!  Very funny!  This takes cleaning up after your pet to a whole new level....

Hi Wanda - Good One!  I needed you around was fumbling for the words to this post!

Toni - The children were way more gracious than he was, in my opinion!

Hi Will -  You know what they say about "stopping to smell the roses" athough I'm not sure about they'd say about slowing down for this... ;-)

Brenda,

After looking at those photos, I do not see art.  I did feel like sniffing the air and checking my shoes though.  Perhaps that is what the artist was going for?

Michael - Too funny!  What he was going for is anybody's guess....

Malcolm - That would be a perfect caption! You are all seriously funny!

Hi Gloria!  Well, the "thing" was built to look like it went under the ground and then re-emerged in another spot....  You know, I never thought about what it must have looked like from the sky!

Hi Brenda,

I agree with a lot of what the previous commenters have said.  There's been a lot of "art" made and sold that I find hard calling art. But then some of what we recognize and appreciate as art today, was thought of as "  ," fill in the blank, when it first came out... The artist had a vision that was lost on us at first.  I'm sure this "artist" had something he was going for.  I'm not sure this one will ever dawn on us.

I have heard it said that art at its purist should elicit an emotional response.  Nobody said that that response has to be positive. So in that respect, I think he succeeded...
