Paying It Forward – Get Involved with Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity – the excitement is building, Part 3

If you haven’t read about Almost Heaven Habitat for Humanity building a house for the Blevins family…check out the previous posts listed below.

On Saturday, March 5th, over 150 people came out to the Habitat for Humanity “Wall Raising Ceremony” located on Tuckahoe Road in White Sulphur Springs, WV.

Attendees included business representatives from Lowes, Wal-Mart, Mattress Warehouse, and Dogwood Realty; members of the Daisy (2205) and Junior (8157) Girl Scout troops; White Sulphur Springs City Recorder, Thomas Taylor;  two alumni of the 2007 Women Build in Pendleton County, and two of the WV republican candidates for Governor, Senator Clarke Barnes and Betty Ireland.  The entertainment was provided by the Night Express Show Choir.

The wall raising marks the official commencement of the house construction and it brings to light the partnership between the family, the community, and Habitat for Humanity.  It was both an opportunity to thank God and seek his continued blessing upon the Blevins family, the volunteers, donors, and the construction site.  Habitat for Humanity is building this house that is planned, funded, and constructed under the leadership of local women.  From framing the walls to installing the finish trim, this house will be solely constructed by women from all across the state of West Virginia.

After the ceremony, 25 women stayed to help build for the day and seven men who cooked and served lunch and served as construction mentors for the women.

Laura Blevins and son setting the 1st wallAll of the exterior walls were set and work started on the interior walls. The rain slowed the volunteer’s efforts, but the team of women persisted and persevered.  The build day wrapped up around 4:00 PM.

The photo to the right is Laura Blevins and son setting the first wall.

The excitement is building. Volunteers will be working

Monday – Saturday every week from 9 AM – 4 PM.

The house dedication is planned for Saturday, May 7th, just in time for Mother’s Day.

This post is a continuation of asking for volunteers and/or donations:

To volunteer and to help build a decent, affordable house in partnership with Laura Blevins and her family, please go to the Volunteer form and also check out the construction schedule.  If you are not able to volunteer, please sponsor a square foot of this house for only $40.

Pay it forward and help the Blevins family have their own home….what a blessing for this family knowing they will not have to move again or live in a shelter.

Habitat for Humanity is one of the most worthy endeavors one can come across. Like Scott commented, nothing better than seeing a family get their keys.

May all the people who have helped out in this project be blessed for their efforts!
