Home Inspections Omaha: HVAC Air Distribution Problem

By
Home Inspector with Foundation-2-Rooftop, Inc.

The photo below was taken in the Country Club neighborhood in Omaha near 52nd & Blondo.  The cold air return is the vent on the floor and the supply air is the one slightly higher on the wall to the left.  The goal of distributing air throughout a home is to attain the most comfort and efficiency from your furnace and air conditioner/heat pump.  The supply registers should be mounted down low with the cold air returns mounted on the opposite wall up high or vice versa depending on where the main trunk line is ran.  Having the cold air return and supply registers mounted opposite enables the air to circulate properly into and throughout the room.  The photo below is an extreme, but perfect example to drive home this point.  As air flows in this room, it flows right back out instead of circulating and conditioning the space at all.  The utility bills will be higher and whoever gets to sleep in this bedroom will always be either cold or hot depending on the season.
