Things are not always as they appear.

A very close girlfriend of mine from college took her own life Wednesday.   We did not talk often, mostly through Facebook, on which her life appeared perfect.  She appeared to have it all: Beauty, brains, family, charm, wit, great job, beautiful children, home, vacations, husband.    But deep inside the facade, she was broken.  She chose to hide it on Facebook, drawing the portrait of her life she wanted us to see.   She always smiled, and made those around her laugh.  But did not leave anything inside for herself.

This is the danger of social media's role in our society, especially for people my age and younger who consider it one of their primary modes of staying in touch.

This tragedy has made me learn a tough lesson about how I use Facebook as a crutch for staying in touch, and will from now on will call and check in on the people I care about more often.   Even if everything seems fine, it might not be.  You just never really know.

Rest in Peace, my beautiful friend.  It's clear you did not know how much you were loved, and for that I will always feel deep regret.

I'm so sorry for your lost.  I think many people on social media sites are on there to live in a fantasy world for a moment and are fighting lonliness.  Unfortunately you can never know the truth until it's too late if they are not your very close friends.  Of all the friends I have on facebook, 95% I never or rarely see or talk to in person.  We really do need to reach out to those we care about in person.  Thanks for spurring in me what I should be doing more because of your story.

Thanks Victoria, Your Castle and Julie.

Donna, please do.  When something like this happens, it makes me want to call every friend and tell them I love them, which is what I did yesterday for all my "old" girlfriends who live far away.   Those friendships shaped who I am and even though we don't talk often, these ladies will always be in my heart.   But we do need to tell each other.  Just assuming someone knows you love them because of history is not enough.

Coral, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. The same thing happened to me a few years ago, but unlike your friend I did see my friend, but I knew I couldn't help her. I tried, but like your friend, she was broken inside. My thoughts are with you.

Coral, so sorry to hear about your friend. You are so right concerning the way we have been staying in touch. Nothing beats a phone call or a face to face conversation.

This is a sad reminder that social media really doesn't ever fill the gap of TRUE friendship.  I hope that all of her Facebook friends take the same lesson.  A phone call or in person meeting is always superior to "liking" a status or typing a message.

That is a tragic story Coral.  I'm sorry to hear it.  Once I had not heard from a realtor in a long time and found out through a mutual acquaintance that she was hit by a car and had passed over a year earlier!  I make it a practice now to call someone I have not heard from in a while.

Facades are hard to see through sometimes.  Be yourself, to yourself and others.  Social media?  Not really...

Hey Coral, sorry to hear about your loss.  Sometimes people really don't know how much they are loved and they think their loved ones would actually be better off without them.

Coral, I am very sorry to hear about your friend. Her family and friends must be devastated. I agree with you, we rely too much on social media instead of personal contact. We can never detect the tone of voice or see a face expression on facebook or any other social media venue. An event like this really makes you stop and think about the importance of staying in touch with your loved ones regularly.

I took this picture in my neighborhood two days ago. I thought this funny pig might make you smile a little bit.
