Shut Up Mommy!

"Shut up Mommy!" Mother and Son arguingyelled my two year old the other night...as much as I was surprised, partly because I have never told my sons to "Shut up" (I prefer a stern "Be Quiet!"),I was somewhat amused. So I decided to post on my Facebook status, "What do you do when your two year old yells Shut up Mommy?" Again, I was surprised and amused with the many responses. They ranged from, "Has that two year old come to yet?" all the way to a lengthy response about discipline now or he may be a serial killer or woman hater...(okay I'm exaggerating), but hopefully you get the point.

Needless to say I didn't take any of the advice listed,  I did quite the opposite.  When my precious angel turned demon child for a moment yelled, "Shut up Mommy"... I did! And the fact that Mommy decided to shut up and ignore the requests of the normally spoiled child, hurt him more than any spanking ever would. I'll bet he'll think twice before he yells at Mommy again!

What would you do if your two year old yelled, "Shut up Mommy?"

I am old school. That is the reason God created soap. Actually I would save the soap for a 4 letter word. Ignoring and waiting for an apology is probably the right thing to do.

You explain why that isn't a good thing to say, and why.  But how much does a 2 year old understand?  I know my daughter-in-law would put him in time out immediately.

Sounds like you got the point across, Markita. Moms often instinctively know what works for their particular child, and I bet you handled it just right for your child.

Kids that respect their parents don't want to disappoint them. If you do nothing you condone the behavior. I have watched Nanny 911, was a single full time dad with four kids and my take on that show is usually a martyr mom who says you kids are driving me nuts, poor me. And when dad comes home, he wants to play, does not have the respect for mom and back her up as he should and does not take her serious. She is exhausted, he is another kid.  Not saying that is your dynamic but usually English Nanny has to administer tough love, rules, punishment and tell Dad shape up, back up your wife because the kids won't if you don't. And they grow up to treat their wife like farm animals too. Less than special. What did dad suggest? Kids seem to have more respect for that male voice unless mom is on the move with a wooden spoon. My take is when they are small, a kite on the seat is sometimes needed. So all you have to do the rest of the childhood is give them that nuclear weapon about to be deployed look. Never lay a hand on them again. They know with just the look you've gone too far. Not going to argue and loss of privledges earned happens as they get older.

They don't want to disappoint you but need to be reined in, taught what respect, appreciation for all you do and basic manners are. If you don't their wife or husband will thank you snidely later. You can not wait until they are teenagers. Too late. Wait til your father gets home, which sounds unfair but shows you two are on the same wavelength. Often, that is not the care. Good job, bad job. Try blending families where in the first two years there is a 72% divorce, wash out factor. Everyone tries to push the clean up now, time to eat but routines, sleep and excercise with family meals all make a happy, well rounded kid. You have to look at what mood you are in and admit you are cranky too. Maybe it was the spring forward time change? Still not appropiate, disrespectful. Let them know when they do right, how proud you are, how big a help they are around the home with chores you involved them with. You are not a maid, cook, just for entertainment. Or to get them ginger ale, a wash cloth on the warm head, set up a vaporizer and maybe a trip to the DR when sick either.  I loved being a parent. 2 girls, 2 boys and worked around the real estate 31 year career. Heading west to ski with two youngest this week in Colorado.
