Living in earthquake country in southern California one is reminded how fast things can change.  Earthquake preparedness is a must; here are a few things to keep in mind and at the ready.

Water: least two quarts of water per person per day for 3 or 4 days, for a family of four that’s s 12 gallons. And that just drinking water, if the water is out you still need to flush and wash and water for cooking… 

Food: the key word is canned, meats, fruits, vegetables juices, milk, soup.  High energy foods like peanut butter, crackers, granola bars, trail mix; foods that do not increase thirst and don’t forget  Comfort foods like cookies, candy, sweetened cereals, lollipops, instant coffee, tea bags.   

First Aid: Assorted sizes of safety pins, Cleansing agent/soap,  Non-prescription drugs such as Pain relievers, Anti-diarrhea medicines, Antacid, Syrup of Ipecac (used to induce vomiting with the advice of a Poison Control Center), Laxatives, Activated charcoal (used with advice from the Poison Control Center) .  Moistened towelettes, Antiseptic, Thermometer, Tube of petroleum jelly or other lubricant

Tools And Supplies: Paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils, Battery-operated radio and extra batteries, Flashlight and extra batteries, Cash or traveler's checks, in case banks are closed in the days following an earthquake, Non-electric can opener or a utility knife, Small fire extinguisher, Pliers, Tape, Matches in a waterproof container, Aluminum foil, Plastic storage containers, Signal flare, Paper, pencil, Needles, thread, Medicine dropper, Wrench, to turn off gas and water.   Just to list a few things you should keep on hand in your Earthquake preparedness kit…
