Palm Springs Wildflowers

Spring is almost here and thanks to some nice winter storms, Palm Springs is blossoming with a colorful palette of wildflowers. Seeming growing from every nook and cranny, the desert is awash in poppies, verbena and baby's breath. We've put together a list of the five best places in Palm Springs to see wildflowers.

Tahquitz Canyon - Conveniently close to downtown Palm Springs, Tahquitz Canyon seeming offers more colorful wildflowers than any other Palm Springs area location. Guided tours are available or you might wander on your own as the trail is a fairly easy hike. The path traverses a seasonal creek which means the wildflowers can be found all along the path and hillsides.

The Coachella Valley Preserve - On Thousand Palms Canyon Road off Ramon Road, this preserve is home to an oasis with a pond bubbling up from The San Andreas Fault. The visitor's center is a starting point for many trails varying in difficulty but whatever path you take, wildflowers will certainly be the focal point.

Whitewater Canyon - Across the Interstate 10 from Palm Springs, this canyon is also home to a seasonal stream that nourishes spring time vegetation and wildflowers. If you drive through the canyon to the visitors center there is ample parking but then you'll have to decide which way to walk to see the wildflowers sprouting almost everywhere in this canyon.

Big Morongo Canyon Preserve - Up Highway 62 from Palm Springs, this preserve has boardwalks and easy trails. The ponds and streams in this area are also created by earthquake faults and the combination of plant life and water makes it a favorite spot of migrating birds. This is a great spot if you like both bird watching and wildflowers.

The Indian Canyons - With several canyons to choose from once inside the Ranger's post, The Palm Springs Indian Canyons offer a multitude of hikes to view wildflowers, desert wildlife and numerous seasonal streams. If you choose this location for wildflower viewing then play for an entire day and visit all the canyons as each own has an adjacent parking area.

There are also many scenic drives as well if getting out and taking a walk isn't for you. Dillon Road between Desert Hot Springs and Coachella offers some spectacular wildflower arrays as does Highway 74 in Palm Desert. Thanks to a cooperating climate this year it should be a fantastic wildflower season.
