Looking To Adopt A New 4 Legged Family Member In Daytona?

Try looking at the Second Chance Animal Rescue in Daytona Beach Shores!

After having 3 different dogs in my family, I would love to have a dog again and so would Steve, however right now is not the time. We have discussed it and when we do decide it is time to have a doggie in the house we want to go with a full grown pup that is in need of a good home.

Over the weekend we happened on a Adoption Clinic by Second Chance at Petco on International Speedway Blvd, and they had some of the sweetest full grown and what appeared to be pure breed dogs for adoption. I don't think they would have papers for them, but I don't care about papers. When I had Shadow my cocker spaniel,  I never sent in the AKC papers on her. (My ex insisted on getting a black cocker spaniel, and couldn't find one at a shelter)

There were a couple Lab mixes, a hound mix, then I happened on a beautiful Chow Chow named Bonnie and she seemed so sad. She wagged her tail once then looked away.

Then I saw a black cocker mix named Shadow and I wanted to take him home now!

I noticed Steve trying to hide a dog from me, he was blocking my view of the cage so of course I had to see what was in there.

This little girl was in there. Her name is Ginger and she is a small 8 year old full blooded Cocker. Oh goodness did we want to take her home. She just sat there with those big sad cocker eyes looking at us then away, almost as if she knew no one was going to take her home.

Steve had to gently push me towards the kitty toys, the original reason we stopped in. I got the toys I was looking for and we left without looking back. Steve told me he wanted to take her home as bad as I did. She was well behaved and probably the perfect dog for us, but it's just not good timing for us right now. He was right, he normally is right too.

I feel bad for Ginger and the other pups that we saw that day though, they are all older dogs, and it always seems everyone wants a puppy.

Before adopting that puppy, think for a few minutes. Are you ready for the middle of the night wake up to go outside? The messy potty training? The chewing on the furniture? Don't get me wrong, I loved having puppies in the house, there's nothing better then puppy breath! I'm at a point in my life where I would be happier taking in a older dog that needs and deserves a Second Chance and so is Steve. I'm ecstatic that I may be able to get another Cocker Spaniel without going though breeder! I'll never go through a breeder again, because there are so many unwanted adult dogs and with Second Chance Rescue in my own backyard, it's a safe bet we'll go there when we are ready to adopt a doggie.

Click here to see what kind of dogs they have to adopt, and whether or not that dog will do good with your family.

To visit their dogs, they have their adoption clinics Every Saturday at Petco on International Speedway Blvd in Daytona Beach, just east of I95.

Lysa - My cat Baxter is rescued, kind of.  The previous owner had to get rid of him because her fiance was allergic and her only alternative was take him someplace and hope that he got adopted.  But, I took him instead.  I love animals, even though they can be a pain in the butt:-)

janeAnne, Not only do dogs and cats (along with fish and all other animals) feel, they KNOW when you've rescued them. As for people that tie them up and leave them like they do, I'd like to give them an eye for an eye and see how they'd like like it. Just for a day, you know? Thanks for letting me know this was featured too! You made my day!

Aziz, Thank you my friend, we need to speak for those who have no voice.

Jason, LOL they call be a pain, but those of us that love them would miss that part of life with animals now wouldn't we? My Harley Kitty insists on talking very loudly at bedtime now, we haven't figured out what she is saying but its the same routine every night. I don't take it for granted either.

After volunteering at the shelter, I will ALWAYS adopt an adult dog.  The puppies find homes, you don't have to worry in almost every case.  For the adults, it's a whole different ballgame.  Ask the workers which are the "good dogs".  They always have dogs that they KNOW are good pets.  They get to know these dogs and they root for certain ones and mourn for them when it just doesn't work out.  Some dogs have a lot of problems that can be worked out with a little time and patience.  Others are perfect as is, but they're older, or not as cute, or just not as "whatever" that the people already have in their heads when they come in.  Just talk to the workers and they'll help you out.

My Pepper has his own issues, but he was perfectly housebroken and loves kids and cats.  He's a good boy, and he almost didn't get a home.  I was volunteering and that was when I'd had enough, I wasn't going to see one more good dog get put down.  He wasn't any more special than the others, he was just where I couldn't stand it anymore.  He's asleep on the floor in a sunbeam right now, and I'm so glad.  ... I might have to blog about him.  ;o)

Sarah, You rock girlfriend! I never thought of "talking to the workers" Thanks for adding that part in. You are so right about the puppies, they will find the homes. I can see Pepper right now laying in his sunbeam, having happy dreams :). Thanks for being there for the furbabies I can't be there for!

Biker Chic (Lysa)...

The pet adoption places break my heart.

When we adopted Ca-Zaar there was a mutt there that looked like someone had abused him.

He was scared to death and the look on his face was heart wrenching.

I had to get out of there before I adopted all the sad doggies.

TLW...ROAR!

I hear you lady, I hear you. It sucks to be scared too. Poor pups. All they want is to be loved. How is Ca-Zaar doing? He still breaking the pots? :)

 Hi Lysa, What precious dogs.

Why not come on over and post this on Our AR Dog Lovers Group! Our Bella is the mascot , She is a 6 year old shepherd mix whom we adopted last year for A marine who could not keep her anymore because of his deployment. It was the perfect time and we are so in love.

Candy, I'm so sorry about Savannah, I so know how you feel as I lost a kitty a a dog within 2 weeks of each other a month after 9/11. Take your time, you know when it will be right to adopt a doggie again.
