Here are before and after photos that no one wants to see.

On March 11, 2011 we were at our Big Island of Hawaii condo and experienced the succession of events resulting from the Japan earthquake.

I'm not downplaying the horrific devastation in Japan and our hearts go out to those people.

Below is just one example of how that earthquake affected people thousands of miles away.  Our small village of Kailua-Kona suffered damage but nothing to compare with what happened at Kealakekua Bay just to the south.

I had long ago taken this before photo because this lis one of my favorite snorkeling locations.  You walk past this blue house on the way to Manini Beachand we recommend it to our guests.  When I first heard of the house that was floating in the bay, I wondered if it was the blue house.  You can see that it is sizable and additional news photos show how it was lifted completely off of it's foundation (in one piece) and taken out to sea.

AFTER (Look at the gable end above)

As stressful as it was to respond to the tsunami, nothing compares to what these home owners must feel.  It teaches me that we can never underestimate the power of mother nature.

The next time that we go to our Hawaiian home and visit Manini Beach, things will certainly look different!

Mother Nature can be cruel that's for sure. I wonder if they had a Tsunami rider on their home policy ;).

Hi Ginger--I didn't know you were here for the tsunami.  The Big Island certainly suffered the most damage.  I could not get over the fact that there was a house floating in the Bay and it makes it far more real seeing your before photo.  Fortunately, we can recover from this sort of damage.  The horrendous loss of life in Japan is still something that moves me today.

Janice, I don't think tsunami riders are available in zones like this.  Having experienced the waves that occur on these shore during just high surf, it's really not too surprising.  I appreciate you commenting.

Anna, it wasn't an experience that I care to have again, but locals weren't too alarmed.

Janet, yes we were and experiencing those sirens every half-hour was disarming as we sat in a parking lot for 12 hours...waiting for an all clear that never came.  Japan's devastation is truly horrific!

Valerie, news report say that 7 houses were a complete loss in this very tiny bay front area.  The whole space will look very different and I hope that the property owners can rebuilt.

Love the photo!

Ginger ~ how ironic that you walked by this house frequently .. and then to see the photo of it floating by certainly illustrates the terrible force of the tsunami. I'm glad that you were kept safe.

Maureen, this house was for sale about 5 years ago and we fantasized about buying it.  Glad now that we couldn't afford it!!  I just cannot imagine how the whole house can be picked up and floated away???
