The Seller Asked "Why Am I Paying Property Taxes on $200,000 If My House is Only Worth $100,000" Property Tax Appeal for Columbus, GA

Cut Property Taxes

Property Tax Appeal  can be initiated by any homeowner that believes the value placed on their property by the County is more than the current market value of the property. It is no longer acceptable for Realtors to go on listing appointments and tell sellers the current market value of their homes has declined below the value for which they are being taxed. Realtors should become advocates for homeowners and provide them with the information, documentation and forms required to File a Property Tax Appeal.

The Property Tax Appeal must be filed with The County Board of Tax Assessors between January 1 and April 1 of each year.

HOW CAN REALTORS HELP HOMEOWNERS?

  • Realtors can apply to serve on the County Board of Equalization. As members of this board you will hear homeowner appeals to their property taxes.

  • Realtors can provide homeowners with the Forms required to file a Property Tax Appeal.

  • Realtors can arm homeowners with the statistis of comparable sales in their neighborhood. Help the homeowner prove that the value of their property has declined. They will need documentation to present to County Board of Equalization.

Jamille – You say that it is no longer acceptable for Realtors to go on listing appointments and tell sellers the current market value of their homes has declined below the value for which they are being taxed. How come? It’s all part of public records. I like to print out the public records and take them with me.
