Pay it forward – Just the Basics

We just never know when an opportunity will arise where we can show kindness and make a difference in someone’s life.  One of my neighbors is going through a tough spell.  Jenny is a single mother of two children.  She works in the medical profession, but her hours at work have been cut in half.

More than likely she will lose her home.  I am helping as much as I can, but without steady income, there is not much we can do.

Jenny called me last week with great news.  She had a job interview inGas Pump downtown Indianapolis.  She said she did not have enough money to buy gas to drive to the interview and wondered if she could borrow just enough money for that.  I told her of course and to please fill the tank!

She also needed help getting the two kids off to school since she would have to leave for the interview before they got on the school bus.  ‘No problem!’ I told her and went over at 7:00 A.M. so she could leave.  Got the kids on the bus without a hitch.

GroceriesWhile I was there, I noticed there were not many groceries in the house.  I made a quick run to the store and bought the basics plus some treats for the kids and took them back to the house.

Jenny was surprised and grateful when she got back home.  Proof that you can pay it forward with just the basics.  No word on the job yet, but we are very hopeful!!

Pat,

Great blog. Somebody should come over and give you a big hug for what you did.

I have one question,

What does Pay it forward mean?

Pat, what a way to be a good neighbor. You went above and beyond for this family. She probably was able to relax a bit at the interview knowing you were taking care of her children and she had plenty of gas to get back home. It was such a nice extra for you to provide graceries and snacks. Way to go!

In reference to Art's question above.. Pay It Forward is where people help others when they see a need. There is a group here on Active Rain called "Pay It Forward". You can earn 2500 points each month when you post a Pay It Forward post each week.

Pat you warm my heart.  This is the way I grew up - with Mom who helped out folks in need (and appreciated it as well). So many more people need just a little extra boost these days - and we can all help in so many ways.  You are a very special neighbor - my hat is off to you!

Diane--I always wish I could do more.  I think I would make a wonderful Bill Gates or Warren Buffett!

Kristal--It does as much for the giver as it does the recipient!

Art--Well, Jenny did give me a big hug, but you can never have too many of those!

JoAnn--There have been times in my life when I had no money for groceries.  I truly understand.  Thanks for explaining the pay it forward concept.

Kristal and Art---You should both go check out the group! Started by Ralph Gorglione and moderated with help from Russel Ray, AR members are encouraged to perform random acts of kindness and blog about it thus encouraging more of the same!

Sharon and Bruce--Believe it or not, this same woman has given when she did not have enough for herself.  She deserves the same kindness she has given!

Rene--Thanks for your comments.  Can't believe employers take so long to make a decision.  Can't imagine there is anyone better suited for the job.  Trying to stay hopeful!!

Anna--When I was a little girl, we were on the receiving end.  I remember all of the kind things neighbors and relatives did for us and how much we appreciated it.  I don't know how we could have managed without the generosity of others.

Dale--Now that is a might fine tribute!!  I am not sure I am worthy of this---it will definitely give me something to live up to!!  Thank you Dale!!

Pat,

Been on both sides of this situation.  In fact, just Friday, I was giving a handicapped family member a ride home from the hospital.  They felt obligated to give me gas money, we've "debated" that before, I took it and used it to by a prepaid phone for a friend who is trying to exit a very destructive relationship and the significant other cut off the cell phone.

The world needs more neighbors like you!

Don--What a nice thing you did!  I don't know if I would have thought of giving the 'gift' to someone else!

Tim--I think we all do nice things most of the time without even realizing it.  This challenge has made me more aware of kindnesses all around me!

Lisa--I have lots of neighbors struggling right now.  I will be so glad when it is not so prevalent.
