"I had to stoop to showing one of Jane Doe's Listings".  This was said and overheard by a few agents at  one of our Realtors Association's meetings.  I was amazed that there was such an poor attitude toward that particular agent and wondered how it came to be.

I have always tried to treat all other agents fairly and with respect.  Ive been nice, helpful and downright accommodating even when they don't do things right, (what I mean is the way I do them) and yes I know my way isn't always right.  A little humor there.  It seems that all of us could be a little more helpful to other agents.  Most would say there are particular agents that we would rather never do business with again.  My question is do most agents know they are doing themselves, and more importantly their sellers a disservice by being mean, rude and unhelpful when dealing with others.

I think that sellers don't know how bad hiring one of "those" agents can be to the sale of their property.  I also think that agents that don't show property because of who the listing agent is, is doing a great disservice to their buyers as the perfect property for them may never be realized.  I think it will serve us all well to be respectful to each other, helpful to a fault and "KILL THEM WITH KINDNESS"Organ Mountains Las Cruces New Mexico

So don't yell at me because you didn't get a lead based paint disclosure when you listed the property and now I have an offer I can't submit , my next buyer may just love your sellers home...If you're nice.

Attitude and Emotion towards another agent is just going to hurt ourselves. It's not worth it... I live by what goes around comes around!!

Ben Carson, M.D., has said to be "kind" in his book "Think Big.  No matter how bad you are treated, be kind.  It is a shame that this happens.  I have experienced this because I am deaf but now after ten years I can hear and the attitude has changed.  It is just unprofessional and wrong.  Good for you to put this out as a reminder.

Hi Chris,  I'm betting that just about every market has a few agents/inspectors/lenders etc who suffer this kind of disrespect.  That said, I know a few who work hard at getting this kind of negative rep.

Great discussion. Golden Rule aside, if it was an Association meeting, it may have also been an anti-trust violation as well! Good reminder to be kind to each other. We all have agents we'd probably prefer to not have to deal with, but let's remember the goal is to serve our clients best interests, not just our own!

Clients are pretty adept at figuring out when things are going wrong sometimes, but if they feel it is the other agent, it's important to tactfully let the client know to not take it out on the other client as it's not their fault, and to stay focused on their goals.

Its just nice to be nice. That is the thing you are not working for yourself. You are working for the benefit of others, and if you do not work with all agents you are not doing your fiduciary duty!

Thanks everyone for the good comments.  I didnt know that some did not show others listings.  I know we'll keep at it and serve all our clients by doing our best to do what is best for the clients.  I guess someone did work hard at being hard to deal with.  Thanks everyone.

I hear it occasionally. I am a by the rules listing agent and hear sometimes that buyer's agents get mad at me when I don't play ball with them. As in "How low will your seller go?" I don't know,  make an offer!

We have an agent in our market who is widely known as a bully. The sad part is that he not only bullies other agents, but his own clients. It baffles me how he is still in business.

Chris -- To NOT show a home just because you don't like the listing agent is so immature and unprofessional.

Chris - It seems to me that we should all do our best to cooperate as that's how houses get sold.  It's understandable to be frustrated when things aren't done "right" though we still may have to work with them in the future.

Hi Chris,

So right.  There's no substitute for not being accommodating, and treating your fellow agents as valuable partners.  Just have to shake my head in disbeif sometimes.  Hats off for a great feature!

Fortunately, I haven't run into many of these. But somehow this type seems to stay in business. Makes you wonder why.

I say show them all and provide your clients with the most accurate and complete property specific and community information you can provide so that they are able to make informated decisions.

Petty.  Some folks just aren't cut out for competitive situations, so they think others should suffer.

Chris, funny you would post this. Just yesterday I was met at the door yesterday by home owners who refused entry to us. When I called the office the receptionist was not very pleasant wither, and I just held my tongue- I was shoing 3 other listings from that office and it wasn't worth arguing over given the stakes.

Thanks everyone for the great comments.  I enjoyed this topic and the discussion.  It amazes me that any agent would think of not showing a listing because of the listing agent and it amazes me more that anyone these days would treat someone so poorly they would consider not showing your listings.  You call me or show one of my office listings you will get...."Thank you so much, how can I help".  Thanks to everyone for being so nice.  Hey Philip,  I dont get it either...
