Lately there have been articles over the last several months of different councilman, mayors and associates and even whole cities being charged with miscellaneous crimes from misdemeanors to multiple felonies committed in office. It is no surprise to me that this is happening

For one thing, the common denominator that pops up for all these people is money. It is amazing how greed drives the human nature without restraint. It is no respecter of persons and everyone who gets caught from letting their greed guide them discovers that it was never worth it.

If it is not greed pulling down on public officials, it is adultery. Amazing how you can rise to the top of your position and then think you can practice no moral restraints. What makes people of power think that they are above established rules, policies and behaviors?

On the money issues which involve excessive salaries, questionable contracts, approvals of projects and the shutting out of fair practices, the long and short term damages are hard to assess. You see people lose faith and trust in their public officials and support for all the systems starts to wane.

Responses from the people caught are all standard. Not guilty, time will exonerate me, these charges are trumped, I have done no wrong and on and on. The apologies when convicted are the standard. I'm sorry, I have learned from this, and please forgive me. Now the words is not what I have trouble with. It is how they are said as to whether they are meaningful. Most of the time they are not.

If people in office would just do their jobs. I want to read about someone who is hated for standing up to injustice. How about someone working late or for less money?

One of my favorites is not being able to get a hold of anyone of importance. What a paradox that has become. Here is a public official that cannot be reached. However, when it is time for re-election, you are bombarded with mailers, phone calls and their representatives knocking on your door for votes.

The people are not getting full value for money paid out

Richie, it's true that many politicians are erring in their ways, but I like to think it is the minority. When good politicians do their job, they go unnoticed. Acting as expected doesn't make the papers nor the 6:00 news. There should be blogs (not run by the politicians themselves, but by others) who make proper politics newsworthy.

Richie - I wonder if these positions should be with little pay and benefits bringing the "service" aspect back into politics.  Perhaps part of these elected officials should be drawn from the general public much like jurors are.

Richie,

Take a look at the Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie. I'm from Mass and I applaud this guy for telling like it is.

The state is broke ,he knows it and is trying to cut everywhere and everywhere he can. And says it.He doesn't care who he offends,or goes up against if they don't want what is truly best for the State.

Enjoy the day

Glenn...thank you  for reminding us that we all need the balance in whatever we do. This is subject is no different. To the ones doing their job, I am very thankful and I support them in  whatever way I can. To those who continue to boo boo, the public has had enough please

Nevin...what an excellent suggestion. We are reminded that 1/3 of the United SStates may be retiring  and out of that pool, there is no lack of ready, willing and able people who would love to give back and serve.

Don...good man. I needed the contrast on the subject. Men like that will suffer for the right reasons and their reward will be great for doing so.
