Big SpiderI have been reading of various afflictions within some who blog here of surprising bad turns of events in their lives, we have some indivduals in our real estate office with serious health issues, and we all have seen the devastation in Japan from the earthquake, aftershocks, the tsunamis and the radiation hazard.

Lots of trouble to go around on any given day. It made me think as I slipped my bare feet into my slippers by the door to fetch the morning newspaper outside on the front walkway that

God Can Put A Spider In Your Shoe.

Did I CHECK before my foot went into the shoe? No. Life just happens like that sometimes, and really surprises you with the hurt.

Hurt, disappointment, illness, even downright tragedy can occur in an instant. Think about that the next time you hop in your car and drive two miles down the block for some extra milk for your cereal for the next day. Did you know MOST accidents occur within a short radius of where you live?

Not to have some fatalistic view that if it is your time to go, it is your time to go, but just look at life not as some are lucky and some are massively misfortunate. If you look at you WHOLE life, surely for most of us it has not been 100% misfortune. I personally see life as neutral with the laws of physics, chemistry, society rules, acts of nature and biology, criminal activity, a lot of cause and effect with our own choices like good nutrition or taking illegal drugs, we can end up where we are because of us.

Think this. We are not TREES. Fixed in place and immobile. Something happens to us that is bad. Like say you lived in Japan and had this monster earthquake. The spider is in your shoe and you got bit. After dealing however long it takes with the shock and the "new reality" it really is up to us to move on, to cope, to take care of ourselves, and ESPECIALLY each other moving forward. Too often too many of us wallow where we are and don't get "unstuck" when

SO MUCH OF OUR POWER LIES WITHIN OURSELVES.

Don't give up, resign, submit to other's skeptical thoughts about you, blame others, be guilty, have resentment or stay in self-pity. The quality of our lives DESPITE OUR SPIDER BITES, sometimes which we know not why they occur, IS UP TO US. You came into the world designed for greatness. The walls, the obstacles, the setbacks, the infirmities, were all set in your path just to remind you how bad you really want it. They do make you stronger and teach you lessons when you look on all those tough times in retrospect. A forest fire burning down part of the forest allows more light for new fresh seedlings to pop up.

Add the character trait of "resilience" to your life and keep moving forward. It is truly the best way to live.

Spider bites were meant to sting, but YOU were meant to SPRING !!!

Gary are you saying turn those lemons into lemonade? Great post that should be featured!

Gary - I just have to say it - You should write a book (call it Gary's Grunts or Wonderful Wotal or something) kidding aside, you just have a beautiful way of framing things.  It really is a gift and I urge you to donate your brain to science after you don't need it anymore.    - your friend in NM

Mike: Yes, turning lemons into lemonade is the point. I just have my own strange way of looking at the cards we seem to be all dealt over time. It is just LIFE.

Alyce: I have indeed heard that suggestion before, now with so many blog posts I have enough ideas for TWO books, but thanks for your support. Donate my brain to science? Love it, well not just yet LOL. I do see the world sometimes in weird ways, i do admit that.

Gary, really, the way you are able to share your perspective is a rare gift.  People are really starving for these little droplets of optimism and the elevation of the mundane into something to marvel is a wonderful thing!

It's not the events of life that build our character but our reaction to them--that says it all--the good, the bad, and the ugly will find its way into most lives. The challenge is to move beyond the bad, embrace the good and prepare for the unknown the best you can.

Angelia: Brilliant minds I guess, right?? ; )

Robert: Things happen, accept them, deal with them, move on....

Norma: So true about the reaction we have, it is so much the part that is in our control.

Good afternoon Gary,

Alyce is absolutely right! You should write a book with all your wonderful uplifting messages..have you ever considered it? You should if you haven't.

Gary,

"You came into the world designed for greatness." Wow, what an uplifting message. We tend to get smaller caught in the routine. Standing up for greatness is and excellent exercise in good or bad times

because it is beyond good and bad

Geeze, Gary!  Now you've given me one more thing to worry about!  Spider in shoe never even occurred to me before!  But you're right that so much of what happens is simply beyond our control.

Very powerful and to the point. Things happen for a reason. It's just that we don't have the answers and we spend considerable time finding them.

Have been reminding myself of this a lot lately -- ultimately it's up to me. Thank you for the reminder and another timely and well written post.
