Breeds of Dogs Banned - Denver

If you have a dog that has been considered "dangerous",  there are restrictions by City for each breed, and the need to research this information (by City) is important prior to purchasing a home.     Some breeds that have been identified in various cities to be banned are:

Pit Bull

Pit Bills

Cane Corso

Dogo Argentino

Old Country Bulldog

Canary Island Dog

Presa Mallorquin

Tosa Inu (Japanese Fighting Dog)

Fila Brasileiro

If you have a dog that is or has been designated as a "dangerous dog breed", you should check into the Municipal Codes to be sure your dog is not included in this list.   If found violating the restricted list, there is a possibility of a fine up to $700.00 and/or jail time.

I had a buyer relocating from California last year, and we found 7 cities that banned Pit Bulls, and went out East to Strasburg to find a City that had no restrictions.

At this time, Pit Bulls are being reconsidered in some Cities in and around Denver if they are to be used as service dogs.

Shirley, I have to agree, but there have been many dog bites with very young children.    Then the City makes new rules.

Craig, you don't have dog bans out in Cary?     In every City close to Denver there are different dog bans.

Marte, that is why my client moved East of the city limits, where there are no rules for dogs!   It is up to the adults and the training given!

Lance, I knew TWO of them, and was surprised not to see Rotweiler on this list.   I thought I remembered it WAS on the list.

Peggy, I think it is just about unanimous to ban humans!

Pat, Michael Vick should NEVER be able to have another dog, and I heard he was trying to get one for his son.

Leilani, I had heard of cane corso, due to seeing pictures of yours!    Beautiful dog.    Nice dog lesson.  I have two cats, but there was lots on the news yesterday in Denver about the dog bans.

I have seen some chuhuahuas and dachsunds that are more vicious than pit bulls.  Pit bulls are actually a VERY good breed when trained right.  Agreed with many above - ALL dog owners should have a license IMHO!

Joan,

I have mixed emotions about this issue. I don't approve of government entities telling folks what to do. But I also think these breeds, particularly pit bullls seem to be disproportionately responsible for most of the dog bites and vicious attacks.

I'll side with my small government insticts on this one. Have to agree with the others against the ban. Interesting debate going in Denver, that we've heard about down here.

Joan, This is interesting information. We have heard this type of situation with pit bulls actually, but are not familiar with the other dog breeds.

Renee, I remember one appointment where a German Shepherd almost took off my arm, so any dog can have bad behavior if not trained properly!

Scott, I know as long as I can remember, we have had some dog bans here in Denver, and thought all cities had similar rules.     Interesting finding out differently!

Honestly, I didn't know more than half the breeds listed, but I know there is talk of similar action here in Reading, PA where pit bulls have been a huge problem.  Unfortunately, we have a lot of BAD OWNERS that love the power they feel from owning a dangerous breed and using them as a weapon.  I feel sad for these dogs.  If they are banned, will these bad owners find new breeds to give a bad name to?

David, I know there are GOOD pit bulls, but the bad behavior some have puts dog bans in place, unfortunately!

Joan,

I had not heard of some of the dogs that you listed and didn't know there were cities that restricted those dogs.  Great information to know thanks for sharing it!

Linda, I am a surprised Denver has restrictions, and other larger cities don't?

Tagrid, I am not sure how this all started, probably from a dog bite or worse, and then neighboring cities went along with this ruling.      All I know, is when a buyer has one of these dogs, I need to know what City accepts them!    I prefer cats!

The idea that they can ban Service Dogs even is rediculouse.  A medical service dog goes through specific training to be included in public activities.  Its like saying you cant have a cane, you cant have a wheel chair, you cant have an oxygent tank.  A service dog is not a pet, its a medical device for disabled people to live normal lives.

Believe it or not, I used to be discriminated aginst because my Service Dog is a Chihuahua.  And people did not believe such a small breed could do anything.  Yet in the 10 years Sarah has been my service dog, she has given me 20 minutes advanced warning before 1 stroke, 5 heart attacks and 6 full body seizures.  She is my life saver.

After 10 years, Sarah is now a pretty famouse Chihuahua in alaska, She's been on newspapers and on the radio.

Pit Bulls are one of my favorite breeds, along with Dobermans, German Shepherds, Great Danes, and Rottweilers, ALL Breeds that have been greatly discriminated against.  And it really amazes me that in teh modern day when people have such a great access to information that they could still discriminate against a breed.

Hell its no different than saying my neighbors house was broken into by a blond boy so now all blond boy children should be considered criminals.  I dont want to even think about the THOUSANDS of good family pets that have been destroyed for no reason.
