One of the things that really struck me when I moved to Southern California was the amount of water I saw. A bit of a surprise given we are really in a desert climate and now are having the driest season EVER!

Water features, and pools, spa, hot tubs, spools and koi ponds are very popular in Carlsbad homes. It seems there aren't many homes that don't have at least a fountain or some other type of water feature either inside or out (I don't have a count on the number that have spa and pools). Or a pool, spa, pond or hot tub.

(these ducks landed in our yard and, literally, 10 minutes after we finished filling our new spool, decided to enjoy it before WE did!).

Water features serve a variety of purposes. They are pleasant to look at and listen to, and provide a calming effect. And some are used to help mask unwanted noise from the roadways. Plus they can provide a drinking place for wildlife (mostly birds, but we had a rabbit standing up drinking out of our low Japanese birdbath in the back yard).

For devotees of feng shui, water is an important aspect of any home, either inside or out. Some water features welcomes guests to the front door; others are in interior courtyards, on in a rear yard to provide maximum enjoyment. You will also find them in foyers or other areas of some homes. And what model home for any new construction subdivision does not include at least one water feature?

Some garden shops, like Green Thumb in San Marcos, have an incredible array of fountains and other types of water features. There is a very cool shop in Encinitas with artistic fountains to suit every taste and budget. Or you find someone to custom design for your home that can include glass tiles, lighting, and even a fire component. Some water features and pools with waterfalls or fountains now incorporate fiber optic lighting for a dazzling array of colors.

Of course the best water features of all, and the most expensive, is the ocean in your back yard. But it comes at a hefty price. There is little waterfront property for less than $1.5 - $2 million and that's at the low end.

Perhaps a koi pond is a better substitute. Know that koi can be very pricey - I saw a home not too long ago with a koi colelction worth, per the agent, over $100,000 (and they did NOT convey with the property!).
