Hiring a good quality contractor take time and patience. When looking for a contractor you should follow these steps. Always hire a licensed contractor.
- Check the contractor's license number you can go to the contractors state board at www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling 800-321-CSLB (2752).
- Obtain multiple bids. Remember it's not always a great idea to go with the lowest bid, it may end up costing you.
- Get at least three references of people who had work performed in their home that are similar in size and scope of your project.
- Check with the local Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed.
- Check only current references with work that have been done within the last 90-to 180 days.
- When talking to the references ask many questions, like did the contractor finish on time. Does the contractor have insurance coverage-work compensation, liability insurance, etc. Did they have to come back and make any repairs after the work was done, and how quickly did they address the repairs.
- Is there a guarntee to stand behind the work that was performed, does this contractors offers, 90-60-120 days, or one year or ?
- Was the final bill in line with what was originally agreed upon, also how many modification were made, after the original work estimate was presented.
- Make sure all expectations are written in the contract.
- Make payment out to suppliers and the contractor, do not give money in advance of the work being done, and make sure the agreed upon ile stones are met.
- Hold onto all records pertaining to the job and payments. Make the final payment once you are satified with the completion of work.
