New carbon monoxide law in Oregon goes into affect April 1st 2011
Here are the changes as of April 1st, 2011:
1. Landlords must provide properly functioning carbon monoxide alarms for all rental dwelling units with, or within a structure containing a carbon monoxide source
2. Home sellers of one-and two family dwellings, manufactured dwellings, or multifamily housing units containing a carbon monoxide source must have one or more properly functioning carbon monoxide alarms before conveying fee title or transferring possession of a dwelling
3. Carbon monoxide alarms are required in new construction or a structure that undergoes reconstruction, alteration or repair for which a building permit is required, and is identified in the structural specialty code as a residential Group R structure.
We've already had some changes as of July 2010, so this is really the second phase. My guess is that we'll be seeing this in a lot of inspection reports for many homeowners and landlords that haven't installed these. The good thing is that they are fairly inexpensive and this really is a good thing to have.
I still need to install some in my own home for safety sake, so this just gives me the push to do so. Hopefully it does you as well! Here is Consumers Reports' Magazine article on carbon Monoxide detectors.
Anther place to get some information on Carbon Monoxide is the Center for Disease Control (CDC)
