New carbon monoxide law in Oregon goes into affect April 1st 2011

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Can Be deadlyHere are the changes as of April 1st, 2011:

1. Landlords must provide properly functioning carbon monoxide alarms for all rental dwelling units with, or within a structure containing a carbon monoxide source

2. Home sellers of one-and two family dwellings, manufactured dwellings, or multifamily housing units containing a carbon monoxide source must have one or more properly functioning carbon monoxide alarms before conveying fee title or transferring possession of a dwelling

3. Carbon monoxide alarms are required in new construction or a structure that undergoes reconstruction, alteration or repair for which a building permit is required, and is identified in the structural specialty code as a residential Group R structure.

We've already had some changes as of July 2010, so this is really the second phase. My guess is that we'll be seeing this in a lot of inspection reports for many homeowners and landlords that haven't installed these. The good thing is that they are fairly inexpensive and this really is a good thing to have.

I still need to install some in my own home for safety sake, so this just gives me the push to do so. Hopefully it does you as well! Here is Consumers Reports' Magazine article on carbon Monoxide detectors.

Anther place to get some information on Carbon Monoxide is the Center for Disease Control (CDC)

I've attached a copy of Carbon Monoxide Questions & Answers:

Cindy, I think this is a good thing, even with out the law I think it would be crazy to live in a home with out CO detectors!

Hi Robert, I so agree and as I was writing that I was looking around my house thinking that very thought! I'm thinking I'm like most folks, you know the importance, but have yet to install these. I will be getting a couple as it's just as important as a smoke detector.

Hi Cindy,  This is a great thing.  I just posted yesterday of a problem in our state were the seller is suppose to have them, the problem is  NO ONE ENFORCES THE PROGRAM.

Hi Cindy,

Smoke detectors and CO detectors. So important and so necessary! Thanks for turning up the lights on this easily overlooked necessity.

Hi Will, I"m curious to see how many inpectors will right it up in the report when they are missing. I know with the smoke detectors the sellers have to change them if they are not using the ones to code..so hopefully here in Oregon it will be the same with the CO detectors.
