How About Some Common Courtesy?

By
Real Estate Agent with David Tracy Real Estate #555994

Part of my day job is to answer the phones. When I call some one or answer a phone I try to be 110%. Some may think it's menial job but it is not. It is the first impression of YOU AND YOUR COMPANY!

Here are some things that get my goat!

If your voice mail says, "I will call you back (insert your verbiage)".

·         Then do so! At least call or text and let that person know that you received their call and are reviewing what ever it is that they need.

·         If you are not prepared to speak to them at all, have an assistant or someone in your office to call for you to let them know you have received their call and are on their issue.

·         And by all means DO CALL THEM BACK.

I can't tell you how much it bothers me to call someone and their voice mail says you, "the person at 123-456-7899 is not available" WAIT! Have I called the wrong number? I thought only people avoiding stalkers and bill collectors left this voice mail message.

·         Here again, how about leaving your company name or at least your name!

When physically answering the phone, have some forethought.

·         State the name of your company.

·         State your name, I and your customers/clients want to know who they are talking to.

·         Can you say "how may I help you".

When finishing up your call, be sure to say good bye, adios, aloha or something!

·         Don't be that special  person who just hangs up the phone;

·         The person on the other end has not a clue, and wonders if he was disconnected.

Guys! Here's a hint, women really like it when you open the door for them and so will your female clients.

Remember men walk on the outside...so that if a car hits you or splashes water, it will be on the man and hopefully not the woman.  (I know this one is outdated but would you put your sweetheart or mother or child in this location?)

A smile will carry you a very long way. A smile will automatically put anyone at ease with whom you are to meet. This means at any office counter or store counter you may be at. That cashier/ employee may be your next client!

I know there a lot of other things we could all be doing so add them as comments at the end of this post or go ask grandma she will remember.

I'd like to thank everyone for coming here and listening to my little rant! You are all much appreciated!

Sussie, I agree with you. In addition I'm amazed at how many people say their phone number as though they were on a caffeine high.

Say it slow and deliberate, so that the person you call gets your return number!

Years ago in school we watched a series called Manners Made Easy, by Mary Berry. Everyone needs to watch it.

My "favorite" is when I call agents about something like feedback and they answer their phone and then say "You know, I am with clients right now and don't have time to talk.  I will call you back later".  Really?  Then let's not pick up the phone.  Nice manners there...what's more important, your clients before your phone rings and it's no one important or after you have decided to take the call?

I feel terrible answering my phone with my current sickness.  I sound like a 80 year old who needs to change her brand of cigarettes but all I can do is apologize!

Larry:Yes they repeat their phone number in a rapid fire way... When I am retrieving phone calls I sometimes have to slow down the recorded messages so I can understand it!

Shelia: My husband always opens the doors for me and in the morning no matter the weather he go and starts my car for me. He is really spoiling me in my old age! It was not always this way.

Billi I really would like to see that series...I am going to see if it is on Net Flicks

Tricia:Yeah! There are many things that could be improved on the scenario you commented on.

I hear you!  I hate it when they just answer with hello...... and then you have to ask if it's them.   My pet peeve is people who get up from the dinner table and leave their chair out in the middle of the aisle blocking traffic... would it kill you to push your chair back in?

Dawn - It is true we are losing all or "gentile" ways! Parents need to instill those again. But some of us parents need to learn them first!

Hi Sussie, I like you gentle reminders about common courtesy.  I think womens lib hurt us a lot more that it helped us.  We still don't get equal pay, and now they don't want to open the door for us.

I think women's lib hurt us too.. and you are so right we are STILL NOT GETTING PAID THE SAME AMOUNT.

The only kudos we got out of it is that now sometimes we get to be the bosses!
