Today is the day many Camp Lejeune families have been eagerly awaiting and anticipating for the past 7 months.  Today Dad, Mom or Husband returns from Iraq.

It is a tradition of the Camp Lejuene military community  for the families of returning Marines make to make "Welcome home" signs and hang them on the fence along Highway 24 entering Jacksonville.

These signs are original and personal.  It is a heart warming sight to ride along the highway and see the signs awaiting the arrival of these families' loved ones.

Along this section of the highway, the median is lined with Bradford Pear trees that were planted in honor of those Marines who died in Lebanon in 1986.  There is one tree for each Marine who lost his life and is known as The Guardian of Peace Memorial.   The trees were donated by Jacksonville citizens to memorialize those Marines.  It is a gorgeous sight in the Spring when the trees bloom and a needed reminder of those who lost their lives.

The Marine arrive at the Morehead City port and from there they load into military vehicles and make their way down Freedom Way (Highway 24) to Jacksonville.

Hi Cynthia - It am sure the returning soldiers feel so much pride coming home to that wonderful welcome.  Wish I was there to take part in it.  We simply cannot thank our soldiers enough.

Cynthia, The trees are beautiful and it must be so nice that they are welcomed home; so many of our Vets weren't.  I wish them all lots of blessings and PEACE.

Good evening Carole,
The trees are especially beautiful in the Spring when there are in bloom.  It is a glorious sight.  They extend for several miles in the median going into town.  I, too, wish all the military and their families blessing and peace.  Thank you for your comments.

Hi Diane,
It is very difficult for the families.  I work with these military families and they are remarkable.  Thanks for coming by and commenting.

That is a marvalous picture with the signs all along the fence. That is a great show of support! I find it very important to support our troups. I've had some friends go to Iraq to fight in the war and it has made me quite nervous and I was happy to see them make it home in good condition! Kudos to you guys for showing that you care!

Cynthia - Wow. It is great to see the reminders along with the welcoming signs from families.  I can only imagine how it would feel to return from a foreign land and see this waiting for me.  Thanks for sharing this, and for posting it to my new group.  Have a great week!

I was googling "welcome home signs" for some new ideas because my husband is coming home from his 3rd deployment and I came across your site.  This just made me cry.  What an awesome thing to do for our troops.  Thank you for putting up the pictures.

Rachel,
Thank you very much for commenting on my blog and please pass on our thanks to your husband for his service to our country.  It is because of him and those like him, that the rest of us can enjoy peace here at home.
