The roar of bikes that firmly set in our ears after two weeks of Daytona Bikeweek is fading out with the leather-clad crowds leaving town. Vendors tents are going down, cash counted, T-shirts packed and gone to another biker's event... Spring break has quietly sneaked in Daytona Beach. The sun acknowledges young bodies with not too much on them, and is shining brighter and it is warmer.
But nobody complains. Bikers needed to show off their leather and a little cool worked for them. Spring breakers need to show off young flesh, and the weather change is a welcome one. There is no difference on the beach between "mature" bikers and springbreakers: two many of them look like a steamed lobster. They are trying to get every ray of our sun, some already have too much, and it is unlikely they will sleep well tonight.
The smell of beer in the air subsides, and the level of testosterone and whatever other hormones are there is on the rise, spilling into the very Daytona balmy air. It is a break for students from long winter... It is a break for locals from the «retirement» feel in Daytona Beach. We are getting this shot of adrenaline every spring, and we feel younger...
The kids do not bring as much as bikers to Daytona area economy, but the hotels are happy, and every place on the beach, that has food, has so needed patrons. Summer is around the corner. Another couple of weeks and water in the ocean would get to manageable temperature. Kids don't care, and don't wait, they are swimming today with no problem, but Floridians stay out of the water until it gets closer to 80F.
It is a good time of the year in Daytona, when we feel young and some of us even feel beautiful.
