The First Sign of Spring in Cheshire, CT - NOT a Robin!

To me the true first sign of Spring is the return of the Wood Ducks, and that occurred this morning in my backyard.  My home office overlooks some very tall trees, so I see some birds that others might miss.  I was doubly lucky this morning that my oldest child and friend were getting ready to head out to New York City and had a fabulous camera handy to get some great shots.  So once again, these photos are courtesy of HeyMagpie (I told her the photos would be famous before she returned)!

First to arrive was the female very close to the house . . .

Female Wood Duck

About 3 minutes later, the male showed up in one of the trees farther away.

Male Wood Duck

After a bit of conversation, the male joined the female . . .

Hope we get to see more of them this year!!

Chris,

Gorgeous photos!!!  After the winter you have had I'm glad to see you have a sign of good weather to come.  The Wood Ducks are awesome and I love the close ups that they were able to get of them!

Chris, great photos of those wood ducks!  These ducks are really unusual for nesting in trees, it's so strange to see a duck sit on a tree limb!  :-)

Hi Keith - I was so glad that I could supply the subject matter if not the actual photos!  And HeyMagpie was once again thrilled to snap photos around our house while visiting!

Hi Teral - They are just as beautiful as hummingbirds; a little larger perhaps . . .

Hi Silvia - It is strange to see a duck in a tree, isn't it!?  That's why I am glad to have the vantage point that I do--most people would never know that there were Wood Ducks in their "yard."

Hi Karen - I too am very glad that spring is "in the air" although winter is still going to try for at least one last gasp.  : (

Hi Ruth - Good to see you again!  I had heard of wood ducks, but the very first time I saw one was when I lived in Florida in the late 90s.  Imagine my shock when they showed up in my yard in Connecticut (they were not here that I knew of when I was growing up)!  I think the first time we saw them here was about 4 years ago.  My brother-in-law is just now beginning to believe me. : )

Well at least if I see a duck sitting in a tree here in Colorado, I'll know it really isn't ME that has "fallen off her tree"!! hee-hee!

Hi Ruth, Well Wood Ducks are not very common in Colorado, so you had better be careful . . .  : )

Chris--I had no idea there were any types of ducks that would roost in a tree---I would not think their webbed feet would allow that!  Amazing!  Learned something new today!  Thanks Chris!

Hi Pat - It really does seem odd to see them, but it causes a household sensation when they appear each spring.  : )

Hi Rob - We saw them again two days ago, but not so close to the house.  It pays to have a "tree house" office!

Hi Chris,

You tell a beautiful story through photographs! What an exciting morning that must have been for you and you told the story, very, very well! Isn't it funny, how most people will think of ducks in water - who would ever think to look for ducks in a tree!!!

I also love the sequence of the photos because they really express the feeling you got when you were there. By doing so, we all can partake in the story!

Great job!

Patricia

P.S. Thanks Magpie!!!
