Get your cameras ready...the super moon expected Saturday March 19th 2011

For all those photographers out there..or just those that love to look at the moon, tomorrow night we are in for a treat and are expected to witness a fantastic sight dubbed the "Super Moon". Apparently this is something only seen every 18 years. This is described as the moon being at its closest point to the Earth as well as being at its fullest making for what will appear to be a much larger full moon..about 14% larger at it's closest point. Sounds like a great photo opportunity to me..so I'm hoping it's not too cloudy!

I know years ago when working in a hospital, the emergency was always much crazier on a full moon, the births were higher as well. Having a Cancer horoscope which is apparently highly affected by the moons cycles...I have to wonder if my personality will change tomorrow. Should prove to be an interesting weekend! Hopefully it brings out buyers!! Get those cameras ready!

Cindy, I was just thinking, after watching tonight's moon rise, that I should head south to a small range of mountains that have very jagged peaks and a few pinnacles and "catch that moon rising".Take the tripod and try for the "big shot"..... could be interesting. Hope that it will be a clear night. I am outside Parker AZ, and want to head south, about 35 miles towards Quartzite, and another 20 miles passed that......

Thank you for posting this unusual event! I hope tomorrow night is even better that tonight for "moon watching." I love seeing the moon doing one of its "low horizon" special effects. What's really cool about this is the camera captures the relative size of the moon. so the subjective element is removed. Happy sky watching tomorrow night!

I really liked the video from Science.NASA>>>>very informative and great to know "why" the Supermoon will be 14% bigger and brighter! The Perigee Moon.! I went out hoping to catch the sight of a larger moon, but cloud cover kept it hidden until it was high in the sky! DARN! But my dog, Buckley enjoyed the outing!

Hi Teri, My night sky wasn't much better. It did clear a bit, but the moon didn't appear any different than any other full moon to my eyes. A good walk in the night air is a good thing anyway..so a win/win

Here are a few pictures of my attempt at capturing the moon. Once the sky did clear, I was able to get a couple of shots...but this is when I wish I had a really good camera. The second one came out very grainy..and the reason why I don't like to use that Coolpix camera that I got a couple of years ago. It's supposed to be really good, but to me..not user friendly. The first one was taken with my Kodak Sport..at least clearer..LOL. Oh well...maybe I'll get lucky in 18 years. I'll only be 68!
