Every Vote Counts in Amherst, NH

If you’ve ever wondered whether filling in a small circle on a ballot really could be a swing vote, wonder no more.

Vote Today

Town Election Day in Amherst, NH was Tuesday, March 8th.  It was a miserable, rainy day and many town roads were closed due to local flooding.  Folks who went to the polls on Tuesday should be commended because the extra effort to cast votes was a bit over-the-top, even for die-hard New Englanders.

Article 26 on this year’s ballot is a terrific example of why your vote really counts.  Article 26 called for the lease or purchase of a new rescue pumper for the Town’s fire department.  When the polls closed on Election Day, the vote was tied at 1022-1022.  The recount occurred this week and the numbers changed, but not the results;  1023-1023!   A tie means the Article failed as reported by the Amherst Citizens Association.

Annual elections are important ways for residents of the town to get out there and make their voices heard.  I’m a major proponent of participating in the local community and I believe that voting is a fundamental right that every town resident has, especially those of us who want to have a voice in how our tax dollars are invested.  Find out when your town’s elections are being held and dig into the Articles being considered.  Understand each candidate’s position on the issues and ask questions.

Caroline - I agree - since we have the right to vote, we should exercise that right or stop complaining about our local government!

Hi Kristine - In NH, property taxes are a significant component in purchase decisions.  While we're the "Live Free or Die" state with no state income tax and no sales tax, property taxes are definitely up there.  Property taxes fuel our local government and folks should get out there and try to direct how those funds are invested.   Thanks!  Caroline
